| 1 "Call now, is there anyone who will answer you? And to which of the holy ones will you turn? | 1 Call now, if there be any that will answer thee; and to which of the saints wilt thou turn? | 1 Call now; is there any that will answer thee? And to which of the holy ones wilt thou turn? | 1 Call now if there be any that will answer thee, and turn to some of the saints. | 1 Pray, call, is there any to answer thee? And unto which of the holy ones dost thou turn? | 2 "For anger slays the foolish man, And jealousy kills the simple. | 2 For wrath killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the silly one. | 2 For vexation killeth the foolish man, And jealousy slayeth the silly one. | 2 Anger indeed killeth the foolish, and envy slayeth the little one. | 2 For provocation slayeth the perverse, And envy putteth to death the simple, | 3 "I have seen the foolish taking root, And I cursed his abode immediately. | 3 I have seen the foolish taking root: but suddenly I cursed his habitation. | 3 I have seen the foolish taking root: But suddenly I cursed his habitation. | 3 I have seen a fool with a strong root, and I cursed his beauty immediately. | 3 I -- I have seen the perverse taking root, And I mark his habitation straightway, | 4 "His sons are far from safety, They are even oppressed in the gate, And there is no deliverer. | 4 His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, neither is there any to deliver them. | 4 His children are far from safety, And they are crushed in the gate, Neither is there any to deliver them: | 4 His children shall be far from safety, and shall be destroyed in the gate, and there shall be none to deliver them. | 4 Far are his sons from safety, And they are bruised in the gate, And there is no deliverer. | 5 "His harvest the hungry devour And take it to a place of thorns, And the schemer is eager for their wealth. | 5 Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh it even out of the thorns, and the robber swalloweth up their substance. | 5 Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, And taketh it even out of the thorns; And the snare gapeth for their substance. | 5 Whose harvest the hungry shall eat, and the armed man shall take him by violence, and the thirsty shall drink up his riches. | 5 Whose harvest the hungry doth eat, And even from the thorns taketh it, And the designing swallowed their wealth. | NASB | KJV | ASV | DRB | YLT |
| 6 "For affliction does not come from the dust, Nor does trouble sprout from the ground, | 6 Although affliction cometh not forth of the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground; | 6 For affliction cometh not forth from the dust, Neither doth trouble spring out of the ground; | 6 Nothing upon earth is done without a voice cause, and sorrow doth not spring out of the ground. | 6 For sorrow cometh not forth from the dust, Nor from the ground springeth up misery. | 7 For man is born for trouble, As sparks fly upward. | 7 Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward. | 7 But man is born unto trouble, As the sparks fly upward. | 7 Man is born to labour and the bird to fly. | 7 For man to misery is born, And the sparks go high to fly. | 8 "But as for me, I would seek God, And I would place my cause before God; | 8 I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause: | 8 But as for me, I would seek unto God, And unto God would I commit my cause; | 8 Wherefore I will pray to the Lord, and address my speech to God: | 8 Yet I -- I inquire for God, And for God I give my word, | 9 Who does great and unsearchable things, Wonders without number. | 9 Which doeth great things and unsearchable; marvellous things without number: | 9 Who doeth great things and unsearchable, Marvellous things without number: | 9 Who doth great things and unsearchable and wonderful things without number: | 9 Doing great things, and there is no searching. Wonderful, till there is no numbering. | 10 "He gives rain on the earth And sends water on the fields, | 10 Who giveth rain upon the earth, and sendeth waters upon the fields: | 10 Who giveth rain upon the earth, And sendeth waters upon the fields; | 10 Who giveth rain upon the face of the earth, and watereth all things with waters: | 10 Who is giving rain on the face of the land, And is sending waters on the out-places. | NASB | KJV | ASV | DRB | YLT |
| 11 So that He sets on high those who are lowly, And those who mourn are lifted to safety. | 11 To set up on high those that be low; that those which mourn may be exalted to safety. | 11 So that he setteth up on high those that are low, And those that mourn are exalted to safety. | 11 Who setteth up the humble on high, and comforteth with health those that mourn. | 11 To set the low on a high place, And the mourners have been high in safety. | 12 "He frustrates the plotting of the shrewd, So that their hands cannot attain success. | 12 He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise. | 12 He frustrateth the devices of the crafty, So that their hands cannot perform their enterprise. | 12 Who bringeth to nought the designs of the malignant, so that their hands cannot accomplish what they had begun: | 12 Making void thoughts of the subtile, And their hands do not execute wisdom. | 13 "He captures the wise by their own shrewdness, And the advice of the cunning is quickly thwarted. | 13 He taketh the wise in their own craftiness: and the counsel of the froward is carried headlong. | 13 He taketh the wise in their own craftiness; And the counsel of the cunning is carried headlong. | 13 Who catcheth the wise in their craftiness, and disappointeth the counsel of the wicked: | 13 Capturing the wise in their subtilty, And the counsel of wrestling ones was hastened, | 14 "By day they meet with darkness, And grope at noon as in the night. | 14 They meet with darkness in the day time, and grope in the noonday as in the night. | 14 They meet with darkness in the day-time, And grope at noonday as in the night. | 14 They shall meet with darkness in the day, and grope at noonday as in the night. | 14 By day they meet darkness, And as night -- they grope at noon. | 15 "But He saves from the sword of their mouth, And the poor from the hand of the mighty. | 15 But he saveth the poor from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty. | 15 But he saveth from the sword of their mouth, Even the needy from the hand of the mighty. | 15 But he shall save the needy from the sword of their mouth, and the poor from the hand of the violent. | 15 And He saveth the wasted from their mouth, And from a strong hand the needy, | NASB | KJV | ASV | DRB | YLT |
| 16 "So the helpless has hope, And unrighteousness must shut its mouth. | 16 So the poor hath hope, and iniquity stoppeth her mouth. | 16 So the poor hath hope, And iniquity stoppeth her mouth. | 16 And to the needy there shall he hope, but iniquity shall draw in her mouth. | 16 And there is hope to the poor, And perverseness hath shut her mouth. | 17 "Behold, how happy is the man whom God reproves, So do not despise the discipline of the Almighty. | 17 Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty: | 17 Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: Therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty. | 17 Blessed is the mall whom God correcteth: refuse not therefore the chastising of the lord: | 17 Lo, the happiness of mortal man, God doth reprove him: And the chastisement of the Mighty despise not, | 18 "For He inflicts pain, and gives relief; He wounds, and His hands also heal. | 18 For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole. | 18 For he maketh sore, and bindeth up; He woundeth, and his hands make whole. | 18 For he woundeth, and cureth: he striketh, and his hands shall heal. | 18 For He doth pain, and He bindeth up, He smiteth, and His hands heal. | 19 "From six troubles He will deliver you, Even in seven evil will not touch you. | 19 He shall deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee. | 19 He will deliver thee in six troubles; Yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee. | 19 In six troubles he shall deliver thee, and in the seventh, evil shall not touch thee. | 19 In six distresses He delivereth thee, And in seven evil striketh not on thee. | 20 "In famine He will redeem you from death, And in war from the power of the sword. | 20 In famine he shall redeem thee from death: and in war from the power of the sword. | 20 In famine he will redeem thee from death; And in war from the power of the sword. | 20 In famine he shall deliver thee from death: and in battle, from the hand of the sword. | 20 In famine He hath redeemed thee from death, And in battle from the hands of the sword. | NASB | KJV | ASV | DRB | YLT |
| 21 "You will be hidden from the scourge of the tongue, And you will not be afraid of violence when it comes. | 21 Thou shalt be hid from the scourge of the tongue: neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it cometh. | 21 Thou shalt be hid from the scourge of the tongue; Neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it cometh. | 21 Thou shalt he hidden from the scourge of the tongue: and thou shalt not fear calamity when it cometh. | 21 When the tongue scourgeth thou art hid, And thou art not afraid of destruction, When it cometh. | 22 "You will laugh at violence and famine, And you will not be afraid of wild beasts. | 22 At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh: neither shalt thou be afraid of the beasts of the earth. | 22 At destruction and dearth thou shalt laugh; Neither shalt thou be afraid of the beasts of the earth. | 22 In destruction and famine then shalt laugh: and thou shalt not be afraid of the beasts of the earth. | 22 At destruction and at hunger thou mockest, And of the beast of the earth, Thou art not afraid. | 23 "For you will be in league with the stones of the field, And the beasts of the field will be at peace with you. | 23 For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field: and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee. | 23 For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field; And the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee. | 23 But thou shalt have a covenant with the stones of the lands, and the beasts of the earth shall be at pence with thee. | 23 (For with sons of the field is thy covenant, And the beast of the field Hath been at peace with thee.) | 24 "You will know that your tent is secure, For you will visit your abode and fear no loss. | 24 And thou shalt know that thy tabernacle shall be in peace; and thou shalt visit thy habitation, and shalt not sin. | 24 And thou shalt know that thy tent is in peace; And thou shalt visit thy fold, and shalt miss nothing. | 24 And thou shalt know that thy tabernacle is in peace, and visiting thy beauty thou shalt not sin. | 24 And thou hast known that thy tent is peace, And inspected thy habitation, and errest not, | 25 "You will know also that your descendants will be many, And your offspring as the grass of the earth. | 25 Thou shalt know also that thy seed shall be great, and thine offspring as the grass of the earth. | 25 Thou shalt know also that thy seed shall be great, And thine offspring as the grass of the earth. | 25 Thou shalt know also that thy seed shall be multiplied, and thy offspring like the grass of the earth. | 25 And hast known that numerous is Thy seed, And thine offspring as the herb of the earth; | NASB | KJV | ASV | DRB | YLT |
| 26 "You will come to the grave in full vigor, Like the stacking of grain in its season. | 26 Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in in his season. | 26 Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, Like as a shock of grain cometh in in its season. | 26 Thou shalt enter into the grave in abundance, as a heap of wheat is brought in its season. | 26 Thou comest in full age unto the grave, As the going up of a stalk in its season. | 27 "Behold this; we have investigated it, and so it is. Hear it, and know for yourself." | 27 Lo this, we have searched it, so it is; hear it, and know thou it for thy good. | 27 Lo this, we have searched it, so it is; Hear it, and know thou it for thy good. | 27 Behold, this is even so, as we have searched oat: which thou having heard, consider it thoroughly in thy mind. | 27 Lo, this -- we searched it out -- it is right, hearken; And thou, know for thyself! |
