The Treachery of Jacob’s Sons
NASBKJVASVDRBYLT
1 Now Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the daughters of the land.1 And Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.1 And Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she bare unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.1 And Dina the daughter of Lia went out to see the women of that country. 1 And Dinah, daughter of Leah, whom she hath borne to Jacob, goeth out to look on the daughters of the land,
2 When Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her, he took her and lay with her by force.2 And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.2 And Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her; And he took her, and lay with her, and humbled her.2 And when Sichem the son of Hemor the Hevite, the prince of that land, saw her, he was in love with her: and took her away, and lay with her, ravishing the virgin. 2 and Shechem, son of Hamor the Hivite, a prince of the land, seeth her, and taketh her, and lieth with her, and humbleth her;
3 He was deeply attracted to Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the girl and spoke tenderly to her.3 And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel.3 And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel.3 And his soul was fast knit unto her, and whereas she was sad, he comforted her with sweet words. 3 and his soul cleaveth to Dinah, daughter of Jacob, and he loveth the young person, and speaketh unto the heart of the young person.
4 So Shechem spoke to his father Hamor, saying, "Get me this young girl for a wife."4 And Shechem spake unto his father Hamor, saying, Get me this damsel to wife.4 And Shechem spake unto his father Hamor, saying, Get me this damsel to wife.4 And going to Hemor his father, he said: Get me this damsel to wife. 4 And Shechem speaketh unto Hamor his father, saying, 'Take for me this damsel for a wife.'
5 Now Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter; but his sons were with his livestock in the field, so Jacob kept silent until they came in.5 And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come.5 Now Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter; and his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they came.5 But when Jacob had heard this, his sons being absent, and employed in feeding the cattle, he held his peace till they came back. 5 And Jacob hath heard that he hath defiled Dinah his daughter, and his sons were with his cattle in the field, and Jacob kept silent till their coming.
NASBKJVASVDRBYLT
6 Then Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to speak with him.6 And Hamor the father of Shechem went out unto Jacob to commune with him.6 And Hamor the father of Shechem went out unto Jacob to commune with him.6 And when Hemor the father of Sichem was come out to speak to Jacob, 6 And Hamor, father of Shechem, goeth out unto Jacob to speak with him;
7 Now the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard it; and the men were grieved, and they were very angry because he had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by lying with Jacob's daughter, for such a thing ought not to be done.7 And the sons of Jacob came out of the field when they heard it: and the men were grieved, and they were very wroth, because he had wrought folly in Israel in lying with Jacob's daughter: which thing ought not to be done.7 And the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard it: and the men were grieved, and they were very wroth, because he had wrought folly in Israel in lying with Jacob's daughter; which thing ought not to be done.7 Behold his sons came from the field: and hearing what had passed, they were exceeding angry, because he had done a foul thing in Israel, and committed an unlawful act, in ravishing Jacob's daughter, 7 and the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard, and the men grieve themselves, and it is very displeasing to them, for folly he hath done against Israel, to lie with the daughter of Jacob -- and so it is not done.
8 But Hamor spoke with them, saying, "The soul of my son Shechem longs for your daughter; please give her to him in marriage.8 And Hamor communed with them, saying, The soul of my son Shechem longeth for your daughter: I pray you give her him to wife.8 And Hamor communed with them, saying, The soul of my son Shechem longeth for your daughter: I pray you, give her unto him to wife.8 And Hemor spoke to them: The soul of my son Sichem has a longing for your daughter: give her him to wife: 8 And Hamor speaketh with them, saying, 'Shechem, my son, his soul hath cleaved to your daughter; give her, I pray you, to him for a wife,
9 "Intermarry with us; give your daughters to us and take our daughters for yourselves.9 And make ye marriages with us, and give your daughters unto us, and take our daughters unto you.9 And make ye marriages with us; give your daughters unto us, and take our daughters unto you.9 And let us contract marriages one with another: give us your daughters and take you our daughters, 9 and join ye in marriage with us; your daughters ye give to us, and our daughters ye take to yourselves,
10 "Thus you shall live with us, and the land shall be open before you; live and trade in it and acquire property in it."10 And ye shall dwell with us: and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade ye therein, and get you possessions therein.10 And ye shall dwell with us: and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade ye therein, and get you possessions therein.10 And dwell with us: the land is at your command, till, trade,and possess it. 10 and with us ye dwell, and the land is before you; dwell ye and trade in it, and have possessions in it.'
NASBKJVASVDRBYLT
11 Shechem also said to her father and to her brothers, "If I find favor in your sight, then I will give whatever you say to me.11 And Shechem said unto her father and unto her brethren, Let me find grace in your eyes, and what ye shall say unto me I will give.11 And Shechem said unto her father and unto her brethren, Let me find favor in your eyes, and what ye shall say unto me I will give.11 Sichem also said to her father and to her brethren: Let me find favor in your sight: and whatsoever you shall appoint I will give. 11 And Shechem saith unto her father, and unto her brethren, 'Let me find grace in your eyes, and that which ye say unto me, I give;
12 "Ask me ever so much bridal payment and gift, and I will give according as you say to me; but give me the girl in marriage."12 Ask me never so much dowry and gift, and I will give according as ye shall say unto me: but give me the damsel to wife.12 Ask me never so much dowry and gift, and I will give according as ye shall say unto me: but give me the damsel to wife.12 Raise the dowery,, and ask gifts, and I will gladly give what you shall demand: only give me this damsel to wife. 12 multiply on me exceedingly dowry and gift, and I give as ye say unto me, and give to me the young person for a wife.'
13 But Jacob's sons answered Shechem and his father Hamor with deceit, because he had defiled Dinah their sister.13 And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and said, because he had defiled Dinah their sister:13 And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father with guile, and spake, because he had defiled Dinah their sister,13 The sons of Jacob answered Sichem and his father deceitfully, being enraged at the deflowering of their sister: 13 And the sons of Jacob answer Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and they speak (because he defiled Dinah their sister),
14 They said to them, "We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised, for that would be a disgrace to us.14 And they said unto them, We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; for that were a reproach unto us:14 and said unto them, We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; for that were a reproach unto us.14 We cannot do what you demand, nor give our sister to one that is uncircumcised, which with us is unlawful and abominable. 14 and say unto them, 'We are not able to do this thing, to give our sister to one who hath a foreskin: for it is a reproach to us.
15 "Only on this condition will we consent to you: if you will become like us, in that every male of you be circumcised,15 But in this will we consent unto you: If ye will be as we be, that every male of you be circumcised;15 Only on this condition will we consent unto you: if ye will be as we are, that every male of you be circumcised;15 But in this way may we be allied with you, if you will be like us, and all the male sex among you be circumcised: 15 'Only for this we consent to you; if ye be as we, to have every male of you circumcised,
NASBKJVASVDRBYLT
16 then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters for ourselves, and we will live with you and become one people.16 Then will we give our daughters unto you, and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.16 then will we give our daughters unto you, and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.16 Then will we mutually give and take your daughters, and ours: and we will dwell with you, and will be one people: 16 then we have given our daughters to you, and your daughters we take to ourselves, and we have dwelt with you, and have become one people;
17 "But if you will not listen to us to be circumcised, then we will take our daughter and go."17 But if ye will not hearken unto us, to be circumcised; then will we take our daughter, and we will be gone.17 But if ye will not hearken unto us, to be circumcised; then will we take our daughter, and we will be gone.17 But if you will not be circumcised, we will take our daughter and depart: 17 and if ye hearken not unto us to be circumcised, then we have taken our daughter, and have gone.'
18 Now their words seemed reasonable to Hamor and Shechem, Hamor's son.18 And their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem Hamor's son.18 And their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem Hamor's son.18 Their offer pleased Hemor, and Sichem his son: 18 And their words are good in the eyes of Hamor, and in the eyes of Shechem, Hamor's son;
19 The young man did not delay to do the thing, because he was delighted with Jacob's daughter. Now he was more respected than all the household of his father.19 And the young man deferred not to do the thing, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter: and he was more honorable than all the house of his father.19 And the young man deferred not to do the thing, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter: and he was honored above all the house of his father.19 And the young man made no delay, but forthwith fulfilled what was required, for he loved the damsel exceedingly, and he was the greatest man in all his father's house. 19 and the young man delayed not to do the thing, for he had delight in Jacob's daughter, and he is honourable above all the house of his father.
20 So Hamor and his son Shechem came to the gate of their city and spoke to the men of their city, saying,20 And Hamor and Shechem his son came unto the gate of their city, and communed with the men of their city, saying,20 And Hamor and Shechem his son came unto the gate of their city, and communed with the men of their city, saying,20 And going into the gate of the city they spoke to the people: 20 And Hamor cometh -- Shechem his son also -- unto the gate of their city, and they speak unto the men of their city, saying,
NASBKJVASVDRBYLT
21 "These men are friendly with us; therefore let them live in the land and trade in it, for behold, the land is large enough for them. Let us take their daughters in marriage, and give our daughters to them.21 These men are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade therein; for the land, behold, it is large enough for them; let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters.21 These men are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade therein; for, behold, the land is large enough for them; let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters.21 These men are peaceable and willing to dwell with us: let them trade in the land, and till it, which being large and wide wanteth men to till it: we shall take their daughters for wives, and we will give them ours. 21 These men are peaceable with us; then let them dwell in the land, and trade in it; and the land, lo, is wide before them; their daughters let us take to ourselves for wives, and our daughters give to them.
22 "Only on this condition will the men consent to us to live with us, to become one people: that every male among us be circumcised as they are circumcised.22 Only herein will the men consent unto us for to dwell with us, to be one people, if every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised.22 Only on this condition will the men consent unto us to dwell with us, to become one people, if every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised.22 One thing there is for which so great a good is deferred: We must circumcise every male among us, following the manner of the nation. 22 'Only for this do the men consent to us, to dwell with us, to become one people, in every male of us being circumcised, as they are circumcised;
23 "Will not their livestock and their property and all their animals be ours? Only let us consent to them, and they will live with us."23 Shall not their cattle and their substance and every beast of theirs be ours? only let us consent unto them, and they will dwell with us.23 Shall not their cattle and their substance and all their beasts be ours? only let us consent unto them, and they will dwell with us.23 And their substance, and cattle, and all that they possess, shall be ours: only in this let us condescend, and by dwelling together, we shall make one people. 23 their cattle, and their substance, and all their beasts -- are they not ours? only let us consent to them, and they dwell with us.'
24 All who went out of the gate of his city listened to Hamor and to his son Shechem, and every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city.24 And unto Hamor and unto Shechem his son hearkened all that went out of the gate of his city; and every male was circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city.24 And unto Hamor and unto Shechem his son hearkened all that went out of the gate of his city; and every male was circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city.24 And they all agreed, and circumcised all the males. 24 And unto Hamor, and unto Shechem his son, hearken do all those going out of the gate of his city, and every male is circumcised, all those going out of the gate of his city.
25 Now it came about on the third day, when they were in pain, that two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, each took his sword and came upon the city unawares, and killed every male.25 And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males.25 And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city unawares, and slew all the males.25 And behold the third day, when the pain of the wound was greatest, two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, the brothers of Dina, taking their swords, entered boldly into the city, and slew all the men: 25 And it cometh to pass, on the third day, in their being pained, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, take each his sword, and come in against the city confidently, and slay every male;
NASBKJVASVDRBYLT
26 They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah from Shechem's house, and went forth.26 And they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem's house, and went out.26 And they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem's house, and went forth.26 And they killed also Hemor and Sichem, and took away their sister Dina, out of Sichem's house. 26 and Hamor, and Shechem his son, they have slain by the mouth of the sword, and they take Dinah out of Shechem's house, and go out.
27 Jacob's sons came upon the slain and looted the city, because they had defiled their sister.27 The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and spoiled the city, because they had defiled their sister.27 The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister.27 And when they were gone out, the other sons of Jacob came upon the slain; and plundered the city in revenge of the rape. 27 Jacob's sons have come in upon the wounded, and they spoil the city, because they had defiled their sister;
28 They took their flocks and their herds and their donkeys, and that which was in the city and that which was in the field;28 They took their sheep, and their oxen, and their asses, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field,28 They took their flocks and their herds and their asses, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field;28 And they took their sheep and their herds and their asses, wasting all they had in their houses and in the fields. 28 their flock and their herd, and their asses, and that which is in the city, and that which is in the field, have they taken;
29 and they captured and looted all their wealth and all their little ones and their wives, even all that was in the houses.29 And all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their wives took they captive, and spoiled even all that was in the house.29 and all their wealth, and all their little ones and their wives, took they captive and made a prey, even all that was in the house.29 and their children and wives they took captive, 29 and all their wealth, and all their infants, and their wives they have taken captive, and they spoil also all that is in the house.
30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have brought trouble on me by making me odious among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites; and my men being few in number, they will gather together against me and attack me and I will be destroyed, I and my household."30 And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: and I being few in number, they shall gather themselves together against me, and slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.30 And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me, to make me odious to the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: and, I being few in number, they will gather themselves together against me and smite me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.30 And when they had boldly perpetrated these things, Jacob said to Simeon and Levi: You have troubled me, and made me hateful to the Chanaanites and Pherezites, the inhabitants of this land: we are few: they will gather themselves together and kill me; and both I, and my house, shall be destroyed. 30 And Jacob saith unto Simeon and unto Levi, 'Ye have troubled me, by causing me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanite, and among the Perizzite: and I am few in number, and they have been gathered against me, and have smitten me, and I have been destroyed, I and my house.'
NASBKJVASVDRBYLT
31 But they said, "Should he treat our sister as a harlot?"31 And they said, Should he deal with our sister as with an harlot?31 And they said, Should he deal with our sister as with a harlot?31 They answered: Should they abuse our sister as a strumpet? 31 And they say, 'As a harlot doth he make our sister?'
