Job Speaks of the Finality of Death
NASBKJVASVDRBYLT
1 "Man, who is born of woman, Is short-lived and full of turmoil.1 Man that is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble.1 Man, that is born of a woman, Is of few days, and full of trouble.1 Man born of a woman, living for a short time, is filled with many miseries. 1 Man, born of woman! Of few days, and full of trouble!
2 "Like a flower he comes forth and withers. He also flees like a shadow and does not remain.2 He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.2 He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: He fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.2 Who cometh forth like a flower, and is destroyed, and fleeth as a shadow, and never continueth in the same state. 2 As a flower he hath gone forth, and is cut off, And he fleeth as a shadow and standeth not.
3 "You also open Your eyes on him And bring him into judgment with Yourself.3 And doth thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee?3 And dost thou open thine eyes upon such a one, And bringest me into judgment with thee?3 And dost thou think it meet to open thy eyes upon such an one, and to bring him into judgment with thee? 3 Also -- on this Thou hast opened Thine eyes, And dost bring me into judgment with Thee.
4 "Who can make the clean out of the unclean? No one!4 Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.4 Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.4 Who can make him clean that is conceived of unclean seed ? is it not thou who only art? 4 Who giveth a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.
5 "Since his days are determined, The number of his months is with You; And his limits You have set so that he cannot pass.5 Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;5 Seeing his days are determined, The number of his months is with thee, And thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;5 The days of man are short, and the number of his months is with thee: thou hast appointed his bounds which cannot be passed. 5 If determined are his days, The number of his months are with Thee, His limit Thou hast made, And he passeth not over;
NASBKJVASVDRBYLT
6 "Turn Your gaze from him that he may rest, Until he fulfills his day like a hired man.6 Turn from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as an hireling, his day.6 Look away from him, that he may rest, Till he shall accomplish, as a hireling, his day.6 Depart a little from him, that he may rest, until his wished for day come, as that of the hireling. 6 Look away from off him that he may cease, Till he enjoy as an hireling his day.
7 "For there is hope for a tree, When it is cut down, that it will sprout again, And its shoots will not fail.7 For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.7 For there is hope of a tree, If it be cut down, that it will sprout again, And that the tender branch thereof will not cease.7 A tree hath hope: if it be cut, it groweth green again, and the boughs thereof sprout. 7 For there is of a tree hope, if it be cut down, That again it doth change, That its tender branch doth not cease.
8 "Though its roots grow old in the ground And its stump dies in the dry soil,8 Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;8 Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, And the stock thereof die in the ground;8 If its root be old in the earth, and its stock be dead in the dust: 8 If its root becometh old in the earth, And its stem doth die in the dust,
9 At the scent of water it will flourish And put forth sprigs like a plant.9 Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.9 Yet through the scent of water it will bud, And put forth boughs like a plant.9 At the scent of water, it shall spring, and bring forth leaves, as when it was first planted. 9 From the fragrance of water it doth flourish, And hath made a crop as a plant.
10 "But man dies and lies prostrate. Man expires, and where is he?10 But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?10 But man dieth, and is laid low: Yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?10 But man when he shall be dead, and stripped and consumed, I pray you where is he? 10 And a man dieth, and becometh weak, And man expireth, and where is he?
NASBKJVASVDRBYLT
11 "As water evaporates from the sea, And a river becomes parched and dried up,11 As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:11 As the waters fail from the sea, And the river wasteth and drieth up;11 As if the waters should depart out of the sea, and an emptied river should be dried up: 11 Waters have gone away from a sea, And a river becometh waste and dry.
12 So man lies down and does not rise. Until the heavens are no longer, He will not awake nor be aroused out of his sleep.12 So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.12 So man lieth down and riseth not: Till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, Nor be roused out of their sleep.12 So man when he is fallen asleep shall not rise again; till the heavens be broken, he shall not awake, nor rise up out of his sleep. 12 And man hath lain down, and riseth not, Till the wearing out of the heavens they awake not, Nor are roused from their sleep.
13 "Oh that You would hide me in Sheol, That You would conceal me until Your wrath returns to You, That You would set a limit for me and remember me!13 O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!13 Oh that thou wouldest hide me in Sheol, That thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, That thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!13 Who will grant me this, that thou mayest protect me in hell, and hide me till thy wrath pass, and appoint me a. time when thou wilt remember me? 13 O that in Sheol Thou wouldest conceal me, Hide me till the turning of Thine anger, Set for me a limit, and remember me.
14 "If a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my struggle I will wait Until my change comes.14 If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.14 If a man die, shall he live again ? All the days of my warfare would I wait, Till my release should come.14 Shall man that is dead, thinkest thou, live again? all the days in which I am now in warfare, I expect until my change come. 14 If a man dieth -- doth he revive? All days of my warfare I wait, till my change come.
15 "You will call, and I will answer You; You will long for the work of Your hands.15 Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.15 Thou wouldest call, and I would answer thee: Thou wouldest have a desire to the work of thy hands.15 Thou shalt call me, and I will answer thee: to the work of thy hands thou shalt reach out thy right hand. 15 Thou dost call, and I -- I answer Thee; To the work of Thy hands Thou hast desire.
NASBKJVASVDRBYLT
16 "For now You number my steps, You do not observe my sin.16 For now thou numberest my steps: dost thou not watch over my sin?16 But now thou numberest my steps: Dost thou not watch over my sin?16 Thou indeed hast numbered my steps, but spare my sins. 16 But now, my steps Thou numberest, Thou dost not watch over my sin.
17 "My transgression is sealed up in a bag, And You wrap up my iniquity.17 My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou sewest up mine iniquity.17 My transgression is sealed up in a bag, And thou fastenest up mine iniquity.17 Thou hast sealed up my offences as it were in a bag, but hast cured my iniquity. 17 Sealed up in a bag is my transgression, And Thou sewest up mine iniquity.
18 "But the falling mountain crumbles away, And the rock moves from its place;18 And surely the mountains falling cometh to nought, and the rock is removed out of his place.18 But the mountain falling cometh to nought; And the rock is removed out of its place;18 A mountain falling cometh to nought, and a rock is removed out of its place. 18 And yet, a falling mountain wasteth away, And a rock is removed from its place.
19 Water wears away stones, Its torrents wash away the dust of the earth; So You destroy man's hope.19 The waters wear the stones: thou washest away the things which grow out of the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man.19 The waters wear the stones; The overflowings thereof wash away the dust of the earth: So thou destroyest the hope of man.19 Waters wear away the stones, and with inundation the ground by little and little is washed away: so in like manner thou shalt destroy man. 19 Stones have waters worn away, Their outpourings wash away the dust of earth, And the hope of man Thou hast destroyed.
20 "You forever overpower him and he departs; You change his appearance and send him away.20 Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.20 Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth; Thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.20 Thou hast strengthened him for a little while, that he may pass away for ever: thou shalt change his face, and shalt send him away. 20 Thou prevailest over him for ever, and he goeth, He is changing his countenance, And Thou sendest him away.
NASBKJVASVDRBYLT
21 "His sons achieve honor, but he does not know it; Or they become insignificant, but he does not perceive it.21 His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.21 His sons come to honor, and he knoweth it not; And they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.21 Whether his children come to honour or dishonour, he shall not understand. 21 Honoured are his sons, and he knoweth not; And they are little, and he attendeth not to them.
22 "But his body pains him, And he mourns only for himself."22 But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.22 But his flesh upon him hath pain, And his soul within him mourneth.22 But yet his flesh, while he shall live, shall have pain, and his soul shall mourn over him. 22 Only -- his flesh for him is pained, And his soul for him doth mourn.'
