Eliphaz Says Job Presumes Much

1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite responded,1 Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,1 Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,1 And Eliphaz the Themanite, answered, and said: 1 And Eliphaz the Temanite answereth and saith: --
2 "Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge And fill himself with the east wind?2 Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?2 Should a wise man make answer with vain knowledge, And fill himself with the east wind?2 Will a wise man answer as if he were speaking in the wind, and fill his stomach with burning heat? 2 Doth a wise man answer with vain knowledge? And fill with an east wind his belly?
3 "Should he argue with useless talk, Or with words which are not profitable?3 Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?3 Should he reason with unprofitable talk, Or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?3 Thou reprovest him by words, who is not equal to thee, and thou speakest that which is not good for thee. 3 To reason with a word not useful? And speeches -- no profit in them?
4 "Indeed, you do away with reverence And hinder meditation before God.4 Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God.4 Yea, thou doest away with fear, And hinderest devotion before God.4 As much as is in thee, thou hast made void fear, and hast taken away prayers from before God. 4 Yea, thou dost make reverence void, And dost diminish meditation before God.
5 "For your guilt teaches your mouth, And you choose the language of the crafty.5 For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.5 For thine iniquity teacheth thy mouth, And thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.5 For thy iniquity hath taught thy mouth, and thou imitatest the tongue of blasphemers. 5 For thy mouth teacheth thine iniquity, And thou chooseth the tongue of the subtile.

6 "Your own mouth condemns you, and not I; And your own lips testify against you.6 Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee.6 Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I; Yea, thine own lips testify against thee.6 Thy own mouth shall condemn thee, and not I: and thy own lips shall answer thee. 6 Thy mouth declareth thee wicked, and not I, And thy lips testify against thee.
7 "Were you the first man to be born, Or were you brought forth before the hills?7 Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou made before the hills?7 Art thou the first man that was born? Or wast thou brought forth before the hills?7 Art thou the first man that was born, or wast thou made before the hills ? 7 The first man art thou born? And before the heights wast thou formed?
8 "Do you hear the secret counsel of God, And limit wisdom to yourself?8 Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?8 Hast thou heard the secret counsel of God? And dost thou limit wisdom to thyself?8 Hast thou heard God's counsel, and shall his wisdom be inferior to thee? 8 Of the secret counsel of God dost thou hear? And withdrawest thou unto thee wisdom?
9 "What do you know that we do not know? What do you understand that we do not?9 What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us?9 What knowest thou, that we know not? What understandest thou, which is not in us?9 What knowest thou that we are ignorant of? what dost thou understand that we know not? 9 What hast thou known, and we know not? Understandest thou -- and it is not with us?
10 "Both the gray-haired and the aged are among us, Older than your father.10 With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father.10 With us are both the gray-headed and the very aged men, Much elder than thy father.10 There are with us also aged and ancient men, much elder than thy fathers. 10 Both the gray-headed And the very aged are among us -- Greater than thy father in days.

11 "Are the consolations of God too small for you, Even the word spoken gently with you?11 Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?11 Are the consolations of God too small for thee, Even the word that is gentle toward thee?11 Is it a great matter that God should comfort thee? but thy wicked words hinder this. 11 Too few for thee are the comforts of God? And a gentle word is with thee,
12 "Why does your heart carry you away? And why do your eyes flash,12 Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at,12 Why doth thy heart carry thee away? And why do thine eyes flash,12 Why doth thy heart elevate thee, and why dost thou stare with thy eyes, as if they were thinking great things ? 12 What -- doth thine heart take thee away? And what -- are thine eyes high?
13 That you should turn your spirit against God And allow such words to go out of your mouth?13 That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?13 That against God thou turnest thy spirit, And lettest words go out of thy mouth?13 Why doth thy spirit swell against God, to utter such words out of thy mouth ? 13 For thou turnest against God thy spirit? And hast brought out words from thy mouth:
14 "What is man, that he should be pure, Or he who is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?14 What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?14 What is man, that he should be clean? And he that is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?14 What is man that he should be without spot, and he that is born of a woman that he should appear just? 14 What is man that he is pure, And that he is righteous, one born of woman?
15 "Behold, He puts no trust in His holy ones, And the heavens are not pure in His sight;15 Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.15 Behold, he putteth no trust in his holy ones; Yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight:15 Behold among his saints none is unchangeable, and the heavens are not pure in his sight. 15 Lo, in His holy ones He putteth no credence, And the heavens have not been pure in His eyes.

16 How much less one who is detestable and corrupt, Man, who drinks iniquity like water!16 How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?16 How much less one that is abominable and corrupt, A man that drinketh iniquity like water!16 How much more is man abominable, and unprofitable, who drinketh iniquity like water? 16 Also -- surely abominable and filthy Is man drinking as water perverseness.
What Eliphaz Has Seen of Life
17 "I will tell you, listen to me; And what I have seen I will also declare;17 I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare;17 I will show thee, hear thou me; And that which I have seen I will declare:17 I will shew thee, hear me : and I mill tell thee what I have seen. 17 I shew thee -- hearken to me -- And this I have seen and declare:
18 What wise men have told, And have not concealed from their fathers,18 Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it:18 (Which wise men have told From their fathers, and have not hid it;18 Wise men confess and hide not their fathers. 18 Which the wise declare -- And have not hid -- from their fathers.
19 To whom alone the land was given, And no alien passed among them.19 Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.19 Unto whom alone the land was given, And no stranger passed among them):19 To whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger hath passed among them. 19 To them alone was the land given, And a stranger passed not over into their midst:
20 "The wicked man writhes in pain all his days, And numbered are the years stored up for the ruthless.20 The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.20 The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, Even the number of years that are laid up for the oppressor.20 The wicked man is proud all his days, and the number of the years of his tyranny is uncertain. 20 'All days of the wicked he is paining himself, And few years have been laid up for the terrible one.

23 "He wanders about for food, saying, 'Where is it?' He knows that a day of darkness is at hand.23 He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.23 He wandereth abroad for bread,'saying , Where is it? He knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.23 When he moveth himself to seek bread, he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand. 23 He is wandering for bread -- 'Where is it?' He hath known that ready at his hand Is a day of darkness.
24 "Distress and anguish terrify him, They overpower him like a king ready for the attack,24 Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.24 Distress and anguish make him afraid; They prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.24 Tribulation shall terrify him, and distress shall surround him, as a king that is prepared for the battle. 24 Terrify him do adversity and distress, They prevail over him As a king ready for a boaster.
25 Because he has stretched out his hand against God And conducts himself arrogantly against the Almighty.25 For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.25 Because he hath stretched out his hand against God, And behaveth himself proudly against the Almighty;25 For he hath stretched out his hand against God, and hath strengthened himself against the Almighty. 25 For he stretched out against God his hand, And against the Mighty he maketh himself mighty.

27 "For he has covered his face with his fat And made his thighs heavy with flesh.27 Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.27 Because he hath covered his face with his fatness, And gathered fat upon his loins;27 Fatness hath covered his face, and the fat hangeth down on his sides. 27 For he hath covered his face with his fat, And maketh vigour over his confidence.
28 "He has lived in desolate cities, In houses no one would inhabit, Which are destined to become ruins.28 And he dwelleth in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps.28 And he hath dwelt in desolate cities, In houses which no man inhabited, Which were ready to become heaps;28 He hath dwelt in desolate cities, and in desert houses that are reduced into heaps. 28 And he inhabiteth cities cut off, houses not dwelt in, That have been ready to become heaps.
29 "He will not become rich, nor will his wealth endure; And his grain will not bend down to the ground.29 He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.29 He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, Neither shall their possessions be extended on the earth.29 He shall not be enriched, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he push his root in the earth. 29 He is not rich, nor doth his wealth rise, Nor doth he stretch out on earth their continuance.
30 "He will not escape from darkness; The flame will wither his shoots, And by the breath of His mouth he will go away.30 He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.30 He shall not depart out of darkness; The flame shall dry up his branches, And by the breath of God's mouth shall he go away.30 He shall not depart out of darkness: the flame shall dry up his branches, and he shall be taken away by the breath of his own month. 30 He turneth not aside from darkness, His tender branch doth a flame dry up, And he turneth aside at the breath of His mouth!

32 "It will be accomplished before his time, And his palm branch will not be green.32 It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.32 It shall be accomplished before his time, And his branch shall not be green.32 Before his days be full he shall perish: and his hands shall wither away. 32 Not in his day is it completed, And his bending branch is not green.
33 "He will drop off his unripe grape like the vine, And will cast off his flower like the olive tree.33 He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.33 He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, And shall cast off his flower as the olive-tree.33 He shall be blasted as a vine when its grapes are in the first flower, and as an olive tree that casteth its flower. 33 He shaketh off as a vine his unripe fruit, And casteth off as an olive his blossom.
34 "For the company of the godless is barren, And fire consumes the tents of the corrupt.34 For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.34 For the company of the godless shall be barren, And fire shall consume the tents of bribery.34 For the congregation of the hypocrite is barren, and fire shall devour their tabernacles, who love to take bribes. 34 For the company of the profane is gloomy, And fire hath consumed tents of bribery.
35 "They conceive mischief and bring forth iniquity, And their mind prepares deception."35 They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.35 They conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity, And their heart prepareth deceit.35 He hath conceived sorrow, and hath brought forth iniquity, and his womb prepareth deceits. 35 To conceive misery, and to bear iniquity, Even their heart doth prepare deceit.
