Job Says He Has Become a Byword | ||||
NASB | KJV | ASV | DRB | YLT |
| 1 "My spirit is broken, my days are extinguished, The grave is ready for me. | 1 My breath is corrupt, my days are extinct, the graves are ready for me. | 1 My spirit is consumed, my days are extinct, The grave is ready for me. | 1 My spirit shall be wasted, my days shall be shortened, and only the grave remaineth for me. | 1 My spirit hath been destroyed, My days extinguished -- graves are for me. | 2 "Surely mockers are with me, And my eye gazes on their provocation. | 2 Are there not mockers with me? and doth not mine eye continue in their provocation? | 2 Surely there are mockers with me, And mine eye dwelleth upon their provocation. | 2 I have not sinned, and my eye abideth in bitterness. | 2 If not -- mockeries are with me. And in their provocations mine eye lodgeth. | 3 "Lay down, now, a pledge for me with Yourself; Who is there that will be my guarantor? | 3 Lay down now, put me in a surety with thee; who is he that will strike hands with me? | 3 Give now a pledge, be surety for me with thyself; Who is there that will strike hands with me? | 3 Deliver me O Lord, and set me beside thee, and let any man's hand fight against me. | 3 Place, I pray Thee, my pledge with Thee; Who is he that striketh hand with me? | 4 "For You have kept their heart from understanding, Therefore You will not exalt them. | 4 For thou hast hid their heart from understanding: therefore shalt thou not exalt them. | 4 For thou hast hid their heart from understanding: Therefore shalt thou not exalt them . | 4 Thou hast set their heart far from understanding, therefore they shall not be exalted. | 4 For their heart Thou hast hidden From understanding, Therefore Thou dost not exalt them. | 5 "He who informs against friends for a share of the spoil, The eyes of his children also will languish. | 5 He that speaketh flattery to his friends, even the eyes of his children shall fail. | 5 He that denounceth his friends for a prey, Even the eyes of his children shall fail. | 5 He promiseth a prey to his companions, and the eyes of his children shall fail. | 5 For a portion he sheweth friendship, And the eyes of his sons are consumed. | NASB | KJV | ASV | DRB | YLT |
| 6 "But He has made me a byword of the people, And I am one at whom men spit. | 6 He hath made me also a byword of the people; and aforetime I was as a tabret. | 6 But he hath made me a byword of the people; And they spit in my face. | 6 He hath made me as it were a byword of the people, and I am an example before them. | 6 And he set me up for a proverb of the peoples, And a wonder before them I am. | 7 "My eye has also grown dim because of grief, And all my members are as a shadow. | 7 Mine eye also is dim by reason of sorrow, and all my members are as a shadow. | 7 Mine eye also is dim by reason of sorrow, And all my members are as a shadow. | 7 My eye is dim through indignation, and my limbs are brought as it were to nothing. | 7 And dim from sorrow is mine eye, And my members as a shadow all of them. | 8 "The upright will be appalled at this, And the innocent will stir up himself against the godless. | 8 Upright men shall be astonied at this, and the innocent shall stir up himself against the hypocrite. | 8 Upright men shall be astonished at this, And the innocent shall stir up himself against the godless. | 8 The just shall be astonished at this, and the innocent shall be raised up against the hypocrite. | 8 Astonished are the upright at this, And the innocent against the profane Stirreth himself up. | 9 "Nevertheless the righteous will hold to his way, And he who has clean hands will grow stronger and stronger. | 9 The righteous also shall hold on his way, and he that hath clean hands shall be stronger and stronger. | 9 Yet shall the righteous hold on his way, And he that hath clean hands shall wax stronger and stronger. | 9 And the just man shall hold on his way, and he that hath clean hands shall be stronger and stronger. | 9 And the righteous layeth hold on his way, And the clean of hands addeth strength, And -- dumb are they all. | 10 "But come again all of you now, For I do not find a wise man among you. | 10 But as for you all, do ye return, and come now: for I cannot find one wise man among you. | 10 But as for you all, come on now again; And I shall not find a wise man among you. | 10 Wherefore be you all converted, and come, and I shall not find among you any wise man. | 10 Return, and come in, I pray you, And I find not among you a wise man. | NASB | KJV | ASV | DRB | YLT |
| 11 "My days are past, my plans are torn apart, Even the wishes of my heart. | 11 My days are past, my purposes are broken off, even the thoughts of my heart. | 11 My days are past, my purposes are broken off, Even the thoughts of my heart. | 11 My days have passed away, my thoughts are dissipated, tormenting my heart. | 11 My days have passed by, My devices have been broken off, The possessions of my heart! | 12 "They make night into day, saying, 'The light is near,' in the presence of darkness. | 12 They change the night into day: the light is short because of darkness. | 12 They change the night into day: The light,'say they , is near unto the darkness. | 12 They have turned night into day, and after darkness I hope for light again. | 12 Night for day they appoint, Light is near because of darkness. | 13 "If I look for Sheol as my home, I make my bed in the darkness; | 13 If I wait, the grave is mine house: I have made my bed in the darkness. | 13 If I look for Sheol as my house; If I have spread my couch in the darkness; | 13 If I wait hell is my house, and I have made my bed in darkness. | 13 If I wait -- Sheol is my house, In darkness I have spread out my couch. | 14 If I call to the pit, 'You are my father'; To the worm, 'my mother and my sister'; | 14 I have said to corruption, Thou art my father: to the worm, Thou art my mother, and my sister. | 14 If I have said to corruption, Thou art my father; To the worm, Thou art my mother, and my sister; | 14 If I have said to rottenness: Thou art my father; to worms, my mother and my sister. | 14 To corruption I have called: -- 'Thou art my father.' 'My mother' and 'my sister' -- to the worm. | 15 Where now is my hope? And who regards my hope? | 15 And where is now my hope? as for my hope, who shall see it? | 15 Where then is my hope? And as for my hope, who shall see it? | 15 Where is now then my expectation, and who considereth my patience? | 15 And where is now my hope? Yea, my hope, who doth behold it? | NASB | KJV | ASV | DRB | YLT |
| 16 "Will it go down with me to Sheol? Shall we together go down into the dust?" | 16 They shall go down to the bars of the pit, when our rest together is in the dust. | 16 It shall go down to the bars of Sheol, When once there is rest in the dust. | 16 All that I have shall go down into the deepest pit: thinkest thou that there at least I shall have rest? | 16 To the parts of Sheol ye go down, If together on the dust we may rest. |
