Elihu Speaks of Gods Dealings with Men | ||||
NASB | KJV | ASV | DRB | YLT |
| 1 Then Elihu continued and said, | 1 Elihu also proceeded, and said, | 1 Elihu also proceeded, and said, | 1 Eliu also proceeded, and said : | 1 And Elihu addeth and saith: -- | 2 "Wait for me a little, and I will show you That there is yet more to be said in God's behalf. | 2 Suffer me a little, and I will shew thee that I have yet to speak on God's behalf. | 2 Suffer me a little, and I will show thee; For I have yet somewhat to say on God's behalf. | 2 Suffer me a little, and I will shew thee : for I have yet somewhat to speak in God's behalf. | 2 Honour me a little, and I shew thee, That yet for God are words. | 3 "I will fetch my knowledge from afar, And I will ascribe righteousness to my Maker. | 3 I will fetch my knowledge from afar, and will ascribe righteousness to my Maker. | 3 I will fetch my knowledge from afar, And will ascribe righteousness to my Maker. | 3 I will repeat my knowledge from the beginning, and I will prove my Maker just. | 3 I lift up my knowledge from afar, And to my Maker I ascribe righteousness. | 4 "For truly my words are not false; One who is perfect in knowledge is with you. | 4 For truly my words shall not be false: he that is perfect in knowledge is with thee. | 4 For truly my words are not false: One that is perfect in knowledge is with thee. | 4 For indeed my words are without a lie, and perfect knowledge shall be proved to thee. | 4 For, truly, my words are not false, The perfect in knowledge is with thee. | 5 "Behold, God is mighty but does not despise any; He is mighty in strength of understanding. | 5 Behold, God is mighty, and despiseth not any: he is mighty in strength and wisdom. | 5 Behold, God is mighty, and despiseth not any: He is mighty in strength of understanding. | 5 God doth not cast away the mighty, whereas he himself also is mighty. | 5 Lo, God is mighty, and despiseth not, Mighty in power and heart. | NASB | KJV | ASV | DRB | YLT |
| 6 "He does not keep the wicked alive, But gives justice to the afflicted. | 6 He preserveth not the life of the wicked: but giveth right to the poor. | 6 He preserveth not the life of the wicked, But giveth to the afflicted their right. | 6 But he saveth not the wicked, and he giveth judgment to the poor. | 6 He reviveth not the wicked, And the judgment of the poor appointeth; | 7 "He does not withdraw His eyes from the righteous; But with kings on the throne He has seated them forever, and they are exalted. | 7 He withdraweth not his eyes from the righteous: but with kings are they on the throne; yea, he doth establish them for ever, and they are exalted. | 7 He withdraweth not his eyes from the righteous: But with kings upon the throne He setteth them for ever, and they are exalted. | 7 He will not take away his eyes from the just, and he placeth kings on the throne for ever, and they are exalted. | 7 He withdraweth not from the righteous His eyes, And from kings on the throne, And causeth them to sit for ever, and they are high, | 8 "And if they are bound in fetters, And are caught in the cords of affliction, | 8 And if they be bound in fetters, and be holden in cords of affliction; | 8 And if they be bound in fetters, And be taken in the cords of afflictions; | 8 And if they shall be in chains, and be bound with the cords of poverty : | 8 And if prisoners in fetters They are captured with cords of affliction, | 9 Then He declares to them their work And their transgressions, that they have magnified themselves. | 9 Then he sheweth them their work, and their transgressions that they have exceeded. | 9 Then he showeth them their work, And their transgressions, that they have behaved themselves proudly. | 9 He shall shew them their works, and their wicked deeds, because they have been violent. | 9 Then He declareth to them their work, And their transgressions, Because they have become mighty, | 10 "He opens their ear to instruction, And commands that they return from evil. | 10 He openeth also their ear to discipline, and commandeth that they return from iniquity. | 10 He openeth also their ear to instruction, And commandeth that they return from iniquity. | 10 He also shall open their ear, to correct them : and shall speak, that they may return from iniquity. | 10 And He uncovereth their ear for instruction, And saith that they turn back from iniquity. | NASB | KJV | ASV | DRB | YLT |
| 11 "If they hear and serve Him, They will end their days in prosperity And their years in pleasures. | 11 If they obey and serve him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures. | 11 If they hearken and serve him , They shall spend their days in prosperity, And their years in pleasures. | 11 If they shall hear and observe, they shall accomplish their days in good, and their years in glory. | 11 If they do hear and serve, They complete their days in good, And their years in pleasantness. | 12 "But if they do not hear, they shall perish by the sword And they will die without knowledge. | 12 But if they obey not, they shall perish by the sword, and they shall die without knowledge. | 12 But if they hearken not, they shall perish by the sword, And they shall die without knowledge. | 12 But if they hear not, they shall pass by the sword, and shall be consumed in folly. | 12 And if they do not hearken, By the dart they pass away, And expire without knowledge. | 13 "But the godless in heart lay up anger; They do not cry for help when He binds them. | 13 But the hypocrites in heart heap up wrath: they cry not when he bindeth them. | 13 But they that are godless in heart lay up anger: They cry not for help when he bindeth them. | 13 Dissemblers and crafty men prove the wrath of God, neither shall they cry when they are bound. | 13 And the profane in heart set the face, They cry not when He hath bound them. | 14 "They die in youth, And their life perishes among the cult prostitutes. | 14 They die in youth, and their life is among the unclean. | 14 They die in youth, And their life perisheth among the unclean. | 14 Their soul shall die in a storm, and their life among the effeminate. | 14 Their soul dieth in youth, And their life among the defiled. | 15 "He delivers the afflicted in their affliction, And opens their ear in time of oppression. | 15 He delivereth the poor in his affliction, and openeth their ears in oppression. | 15 He delivereth the afflicted by their affliction, And openeth their ear in oppression. | 15 He shall deliver the poor out of his distress, and shall open his ear in affliction. | 15 He draweth out the afflicted in his affliction, And uncovereth in oppression their ear. | NASB | KJV | ASV | DRB | YLT |
| 16 "Then indeed, He enticed you from the mouth of distress, Instead of it, a broad place with no constraint; And that which was set on your table was full of fatness. | 16 Even so would he have removed thee out of the strait into a broad place, where there is no straitness; and that which should be set on thy table should be full of fatness. | 16 Yea, he would have allured thee out of distress Into a broad place, where there is no straitness; And that which is set on thy table would be full of fatness. | 16 Therefore he shall set thee at large out of the narrow mouth, and which hath no foundation under it : and the rest of thy table shall be full of fatness. | 16 And also He moved thee from a strait place, To a broad place -- no straitness under it, And the sitting beyond of thy table Hath been full of fatness. | 17 "But you were full of judgment on the wicked; Judgment and justice take hold of you. | 17 But thou hast fulfilled the judgment of the wicked: judgment and justice take hold on thee. | 17 But thou art full of the judgment of the wicked: Judgment and justice take hold on thee . | 17 Thy cause hath been judged as that of the wicked, cause and judgment thou shalt recover. | 17 And the judgment of the wicked thou hast fulfilled, Judgment and justice are upheld -- because of fury, | 18 "Beware that wrath does not entice you to scoffing; And do not let the greatness of the ransom turn you aside. | 18 Because there is wrath, beware lest he take thee away with his stroke: then a great ransom cannot deliver thee. | 18 For let not wrath stir thee up against chastisements; Neither let the greatness of the ransom turn thee aside. | 18 Therefore let not anger overcome thee to oppress any man : neither let multitude of gifts turn thee aside. | 18 Lest He move thee with a stroke, And the abundance of an atonement turn thee not aside. | 19 "Will your riches keep you from distress, Or all the forces of your strength? | 19 Will he esteem thy riches? no, not gold, nor all the forces of strength. | 19 Will thy cry avail, that thou be not in distress, Or all the forces of thy'strength? | 19 Lay down thy greatness without tribulation, and all the mighty of strength. | 19 Doth He value thy riches? He hath gold, and all the forces of power. | 20 "Do not long for the night, When people vanish in their place. | 20 Desire not the night, when people are cut off in their place. | 20 Desire not the night, When peoples are cut off in their place. | 20 Prolong not the night that people may come up for them. | 20 Desire not the night, For the going up of peoples in their stead. | NASB | KJV | ASV | DRB | YLT |
| 21 "Be careful, do not turn to evil, For you have preferred this to affliction. | 21 Take heed, regard not iniquity: for this hast thou chosen rather than affliction. | 21 Take heed, regard not iniquity: For this hast thou chosen rather than affliction. | 21 Beware thou turn not aside to iniquity : for this thou hast begun to follow after misery. | 21 Take heed -- do not turn unto iniquity, For on this thou hast fixed Rather than on affliction. | 22 "Behold, God is exalted in His power; Who is a teacher like Him? | 22 Behold, God exalteth by his power: who teacheth like him? | 22 Behold, God doeth loftily in his power: Who is a teacher like unto him? | 22 Behold, God is high in his strength, and none is like him among the lawgivers. | 22 Lo, God doth sit on high by His power, Who is like Him -- a teacher? | 23 "Who has appointed Him His way, And who has said, 'You have done wrong '? | 23 Who hath enjoined him his way? or who can say, Thou hast wrought iniquity? | 23 Who hath enjoined him his way? Or who can say, Thou hast wrought unrighteousness? | 23 Who can search out his ways? or who can say to him : Thou has wrought iniquity? | 23 Who hath appointed unto Him his way? And who said, 'Thou hast done iniquity?' | 24 "Remember that you should exalt His work, Of which men have sung. | 24 Remember that thou magnify his work, which men behold. | 24 Remember that thou magnify his work, Whereof men have sung. | 24 Remember that thou knowest not his work, concerning which men have sung. | 24 Remember that thou magnify His work That men have beheld. | 25 "All men have seen it; Man beholds from afar. | 25 Every man may see it; man may behold it afar off. | 25 All men have looked thereon; Man beholdeth it afar off. | 25 All men see him, every one beholdeth afar off. | 25 All men have looked on it, Man looketh attentively from afar. | NASB | KJV | ASV | DRB | YLT |
| 26 "Behold, God is exalted, and we do not know Him; The number of His years is unsearchable. | 26 Behold, God is great, and we know him not, neither can the number of his years be searched out. | 26 Behold, God is great, and we know him not; The number of his years is unsearchable. | 26 Behold, God is great, exceeding our knowledge : the number of his years is inestimable. | 26 Lo, God is high, And we know not the number of His years, Yea, there is no searching. | 27 "For He draws up the drops of water, They distill rain from the mist, | 27 For he maketh small the drops of water: they pour down rain according to the vapour thereof: | 27 For he draweth up the drops of water, Which distil in rain from his vapor, | 27 He lifteth up the drops of rain, and poureth out showers like floods : | 27 When He doth diminish droppings of the waters, They refine rain according to its vapour, | 28 Which the clouds pour down, They drip upon man abundantly. | 28 Which the clouds do drop and distil upon man abundantly. | 28 Which the skies pour down And drop upon man abundantly. | 28 Which flow from the clouds that cover all above. | 28 Which clouds do drop, They distil on man abundantly. | 29 "Can anyone understand the spreading of the clouds, The thundering of His pavilion? | 29 Also can any understand the spreadings of the clouds, or the noise of his tabernacle? | 29 Yea, can any understand the spreadings of the clouds, The thunderings of his pavilion? | 29 If he will spread out clouds as his tent, | 29 Yea, doth any understand The spreadings out of a cloud? The noises of His tabernacle? | 30 "Behold, He spreads His lightning about Him, And He covers the depths of the sea. | 30 Behold, he spreadeth his light upon it, and covereth the bottom of the sea. | 30 Behold, he spreadeth his light around him; And he covereth the bottom of the sea. | 30 And lighten with his light from above, he shall cover also the ends of the sea. | 30 Lo, He hath spread over it His light, And the roots of the sea He hath covered, | NASB | KJV | ASV | DRB | YLT |
| 31 "For by these He judges peoples; He gives food in abundance. | 31 For by them judgeth he the people; he giveth meat in abundance. | 31 For by these he judgeth the peoples; He giveth food in abundance. | 31 For by these he judgeth people, and giveth food to many mortals. | 31 For by them He doth judge peoples, He giveth food in abundance. | 32 "He covers His hands with the lightning, And commands it to strike the mark. | 32 With clouds he covereth the light; and commandeth it not to shine by the cloud that cometh betwixt. | 32 He covereth his hands with the lightning, And giveth it a charge that it strike the mark. | 32 In his hands he hideth the light, and commandeth it to come again. | 32 By two palms He hath covered the light, And layeth a charge over it in meeting, | 33 "Its noise declares His presence; The cattle also, concerning what is coming up. | 33 The noise thereof sheweth concerning it, the cattle also concerning the vapour. | 33 The noise thereof telleth concerning him, The cattle also concerning the storm that cometh up. | 33 He sheweth his friend concerning it, that it is his possession, and that he may come up to it. | 33 He sheweth by it to his friend substance, Anger against perversity. |
