The Vanity of Life. For the choir director, for Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.
NASBKJVASVDRBYLT
1 For the choir director, for Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. I said, "I will guard my ways That I may not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth as with a muzzle While the wicked are in my presence."1 I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, while the wicked is before me.1 I said, I will take heed to my ways, That I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, While the wicked is before me.1 Unto the end, for Idithun himself, a canticle of David. I said: I will take heed to my ways : that I sin not with my tongue. I have set guard to my mouth, when the sinner stood against me. 1 To the Overseer, to Jeduthun. -- A Psalm of David. I have said, 'I observe my ways, Against sinning with my tongue, I keep for my mouth a curb, while the wicked is before me.'
2 I was mute and silent, I refrained even from good, And my sorrow grew worse.2 I was dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good; and my sorrow was stirred.2 I was dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good; And my sorrow was stirred.2 I was dumb, and was humbled, and kept silence from good things : and my sorrow was renewed. 2 I was dumb with silence, I kept silent from good, and my pain is excited.
3 My heart was hot within me, While I was musing the fire burned; Then I spoke with my tongue:3 My heart was hot within me, while I was musing the fire burned: then spake I with my tongue,3 My heart was hot within me; While I was musing the fire burned: Then'spake I with my tongue:3 My heart grew hot within me : and in my meditation a fire shall flame out. 3 Hot is my heart within me, In my meditating doth the fire burn, I have spoken with my tongue.
4 "LORD, make me to know my end And what is the extent of my days; Let me know how transient I am.4 LORD, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is: that I may know how frail I am.4 Jehovah, make me to know mine end, And the measure of my days, what it is; Let me know how frail I am.4 I spoke with my tongue : O Lord, make me know my end. And what is the number of my days : that I may know what is wanting to me. 4 Cause me to know, O Jehovah, mine end, And the measure of my days -- what it is,' I know how frail I am.
5 "Behold, You have made my days as handbreadths, And my lifetime as nothing in Your sight; Surely every man at his best is a mere breath. Selah.5 Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah.5 Behold, thou hast made my days as handbreadths; And my life-time is as nothing before thee: Surely every man at his best estate is altogether vanity. Selah5 Behold thou hast made my days measurable : and my substance is as nothing before thee. And indeed all things are vanity : every man living. 5 Lo, handbreadths Thou hast made my days, And mine age is as nothing before Thee, Only, all vanity is every man set up. Selah.
NASBKJVASVDRBYLT
6 "Surely every man walks about as a phantom; Surely they make an uproar for nothing; He amasses riches and does not know who will gather them.6 Surely every man walketh in a vain shew: surely they are disquieted in vain: he heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them.6 Surely every man walketh in a vain show; Surely they are disquieted in vain: He heapeth up riches , and knoweth not who shall gather them.6 Surely man passeth as an image : yea, and he is disquieted in vain. He storeth up : and he knoweth not for whom he shall gather these things. 6 Only, in an image doth each walk habitually, Only, in vain, they are disquieted, He heapeth up and knoweth not who gathereth them.
7 "And now, Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in You.7 And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee.7 And now, Lord, what wait I for? My hope is in thee.7 And now what is my hope? is it not the Lord? and my substance is with thee. 7 And, now, what have I expected? O Lord, my hope -- it is of Thee.
8 "Deliver me from all my transgressions; Make me not the reproach of the foolish.8 Deliver me from all my transgressions: make me not the reproach of the foolish.8 Deliver me from all my transgressions: Make me not the reproach of the foolish.8 Deliver thou me from all my iniquities : thou hast made me a reproach to the fool. 8 From all my transgressions deliver me, A reproach of the fool make me not.
9 "I have become mute, I do not open my mouth, Because it is You who have done it.9 I was dumb, I opened not my mouth; because thou didst it.9 I was dumb, I opened not my mouth; Because thou didst it.9 I was dumb, and I opened not my mouth, because thou hast done it. 9 I have been dumb, I open not my mouth, Because Thou -- Thou hast done it.
10 "Remove Your plague from me; Because of the opposition of Your hand I am perishing.10 Remove thy stroke away from me: I am consumed by the blow of thine hand.10 Remove thy stroke away from me: I am consumed by the blow of thy hand.10 Remove thy scourges from me. The strength of thy hand hath made me faint in rebukes: 10 Turn aside from off me Thy stroke, From the striving of Thy hand I have been consumed.
NASBKJVASVDRBYLT
11 "With reproofs You chasten a man for iniquity; You consume as a moth what is precious to him; Surely every man is a mere breath. Selah.11 When thou with rebukes dost correct man for iniquity, thou makest his beauty to consume away like a moth: surely every man is vanity. Selah.11 When thou with rebukes dost correct man for iniquity, Thou makest his beauty to consume away like a moth: Surely every man is vanity. Selah11 thou hast corrected man for iniquity. And thou hast made his soul to waste away like a spider : surely in vain is any man disquieted. 11 With reproofs against iniquity, Thou hast corrected man, And dost waste as a moth his desirableness, Only, vanity is every man. Selah.
12 "Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry; Do not be silent at my tears; For I am a stranger with You, A sojourner like all my fathers.12 Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear unto my cry; hold not thy peace at my tears: for I am a stranger with thee, and a sojourner, as all my fathers were.12 Hear my prayer, O Jehovah, and give ear unto my cry; Hold not thy peace at my tears: For I am a stranger with thee, A sojourner, as all my fathers were.12 Hear my prayer, O Lord, and my supplication : give ear to my tears. Be not silent : for I am a stranger with thee, and a sojourner as all my fathers were. 12 Hear my prayer, O Jehovah, And to my cry give ear, Unto my tear be not silent, For a sojourner I am with Thee, A settler like all my fathers.
13 "Turn Your gaze away from me, that I may smile again Before I depart and am no more."13 O spare me, that I may recover strength, before I go hence, and be no more.13 Oh spare me, that I may recover strength, Before I go hence, and be no more. 13 O forgive me, that I may be refreshed, before I go hence, and be no more. 13 Look from me, and I brighten up before I go and am not!
