The Death of Israel
NASBKJVASVDRBYLT
1 Then Joseph fell on his father's face, and wept over him and kissed him.1 And Joseph fell upon his father's face, and wept upon him, and kissed him.1 And Joseph fell upon his father's face, and wept upon him, and kissed him.1 And when Joseph saw this, he fell upon his father's face weeping and kissing him. 1 And Joseph falleth on his father's face, and weepeth over him, and kisseth him;
2 Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. So the physicians embalmed Israel.2 And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father: and the physicians embalmed Israel.2 And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father: and the physicians embalmed Israel.2 And he commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. 2 and Joseph commandeth his servants, the physicians, to embalm his father, and the physicians embalm Israel;
3 Now forty days were required for it, for such is the period required for embalming. And the Egyptians wept for him seventy days.3 And forty days were fulfilled for him; for so are fulfilled the days of those which are embalmed: and the Egyptians mourned for him threescore and ten days.3 And forty days were fulfilled for him; for so are fulfilled the days of embalming: and the Egyptians wept for him three-score and ten days.3 And while they were fulfilling his commands, there passed forty days: for this was the manner with bodies that were embalmed, and Egypt mounted for him seventy days. 3 and they fulfil for him forty days, for so they fulfil the days of the embalmed, and the Egyptians weep for him seventy days.
4 When the days of mourning for him were past, Joseph spoke to the household of Pharaoh, saying, "If now I have found favor in your sight, please speak to Pharaoh, saying,4 And when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh, saying, If now I have found grace in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,4 And when the days of weeping for him were past, Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh, saying, If now I have found favor in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,4 And the time of the mourning being expired, Joseph spoke to the family of Pharao: If I have found favour in your sight, speak in the ears of Pharao: 4 And the days of his weeping pass away, and Joseph speaketh unto the house of Pharaoh, saying, 'If, I pray you, I have found grace in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,
5 'My father made me swear, saying, "Behold, I am about to die; in my grave which I dug for myself in the land of Canaan, there you shall bury me." Now therefore, please let me go up and bury my father; then I will return.'"5 My father made me swear, saying, Lo, I die: in my grave which I have digged for me in the land of Canaan, there shalt thou bury me. Now therefore let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, and I will come again.5 My father made me swear, saying, Lo, I die: in my grave which I have digged for me in the land of Canaan, there shalt thou bury me. Now therefore let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, and I will come again.5 For my father made me swear to him, saying: Behold I die: thou shalt bury me in my sepulchre which I have digged for myself in the land of Chanaan. So I will go up and bury my father, and return. 5 My father caused me to swear, saying, Lo, I am dying; in my burying-place which I have prepared for myself in the land of Canaan, there dost thou bury me; and now, let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, and return;'
NASBKJVASVDRBYLT
6 Pharaoh said, "Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear."6 And Pharaoh said, Go up, and bury thy father, according as he made thee swear.6 And Pharaoh said, Go up, and bury thy father, according as he made thee swear.6 And Pharao said to him: Go up and bury thy father according as he made thee swear. 6 and Pharaoh saith, 'Go up and bury thy father, as he caused thee to swear.'
7 So Joseph went up to bury his father, and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his household and all the elders of the land of Egypt,7 And Joseph went up to bury his father: and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt,7 And Joseph went up to bury his father; and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt,7 So he went up, and there went with him all the ancients of Pharao's house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt, 7 And Joseph goeth up to bury his father, and go up with him do all the servants of Pharaoh, elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt,
8 and all the household of Joseph and his brothers and his father's household; they left only their little ones and their flocks and their herds in the land of Goshen.8 And all the house of Joseph, and his brethren, and his father's house: only their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen.8 and all the house of Joseph, and his brethren, and his father's house: only their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen.8 And the house of Joseph with his brethren, except their children, and their flocks and herds, which they left in the land of Gessen. 8 and all the house of Joseph, and his brethren, and the house of his father; only their infants, and their flock, and their herd, have they left in the land of Goshen;
9 There also went up with him both chariots and horsemen; and it was a very great company.9 And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen: and it was a very great company.9 And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen: and it was a very great company.9 He had also in his train chariots and horsemen: and it was it great company. 9 and there go up with him both chariot and horsemen, and the camp is very great.
10 When they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, they lamented there with a very great and sorrowful lamentation; and he observed seven days mourning for his father.10 And they came to the threshingfloor of Atad, which is beyond Jordan, and there they mourned with a great and very sore lamentation: and he made a mourning for his father seven days.10 And they came to the threshing-floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, and there they lamented with a very great and sore lamentation: and he made a mourning for his father seven days.10 And they came to the threshingfloor of Atad, which is situated beyond the Jordan: where celebrating the exequies with a great and vehement lamentation, they spent full seven days. 10 And they come unto the threshing-floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, and they lament there, a lamentation great and very grievous; and he maketh for his father a mourning seven days,
NASBKJVASVDRBYLT
11 Now when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, "This is a grievous mourning for the Egyptians." Therefore it was named Abel-mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.11 And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, This is a grievous mourning to the Egyptians: wherefore the name of it was called Abelmizraim, which is beyond Jordan.11 And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, This is a grievous mourning to the Egyptians: wherefore the name of it was called Abel-mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.11 And when the inhabitants of Chanaan saw this, they said: This is a great mourning to the Egyptians. And there- fore the name of that place was called, The mourning of Egypt. 11 and the inhabitant of the land, the Canaanite, see the mourning in the threshing-floor of Atad, and say, 'A grievous mourning is this to the Egyptians;' therefore hath one called its name 'The mourning of the Egyptians,' which is beyond the Jordan.
Burial at Machpelah
12 Thus his sons did for him as he had charged them;12 And his sons did unto him according as he commanded them:12 And his sons did unto him according as he commanded them:12 So the sons of Jacob did as he had commanded them. 12 And his sons do to him so as he commanded them,
13 for his sons carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre, which Abraham had bought along with the field for a burial site from Ephron the Hittite.13 For his sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field for a possession of a buryingplace of Ephron the Hittite, before Mamre.13 for his sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field, for a possession of a burying-place, of Ephron the Hittite, before Mamre.13 And carrying him into the land of Chanaan, they buried him in the double cave which Abraham had bought together with the held for a possession of a buryingplace, of Ephron the Hethite over against Mambre. 13 and his sons bear him away to the land of Canaan, and bury him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field for a possession of a burying-place, from Ephron the Hittite, on the front of Mamre.
14 After he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, he and his brothers, and all who had gone up with him to bury his father.14 And Joseph returned into Egypt, he, and his brethren, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father.14 And Joseph returned into Egypt, he, and his brethren, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father.14 And Joseph returned into Egypt with his brethren, and all that were in his company, after he had buried his father. 14 And Joseph turneth back to Egypt, he and his brethren, and all who are going up with him to bury his father, after his burying his father.
15 When Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, "What if Joseph bears a grudge against us and pays us back in full for all the wrong which we did to him!"15 And when Joseph's brethren saw that their father was dead, they said, Joseph will peradventure hate us, and will certainly requite us all the evil which we did unto him.15 And when Joseph's brethren saw that their father was dead, they said, It may be that Joseph will hate us, and will fully requite us all the evil which we did unto him.15 Now he being dead, his brethren were afraid, and talked one with another : Lest perhaps he should remember the wrong he suffered, and requite us all the evil that we did to him. 15 And the brethren of Joseph see that their father is dead, and say, 'Peradventure Joseph doth hate us, and doth certainly return to us all the evil which we did with him.'
NASBKJVASVDRBYLT
16 So they sent a message to Joseph, saying, "Your father charged before he died, saying,16 And they sent a messenger unto Joseph, saying, Thy father did command before he died, saying,16 And they sent a message unto Joseph, saying, Thy father did command before he died, saying,16 And they sent a message to him, saying: Thy father commanded us before he died, 16 And they give a charge for Joseph, saying, 'Thy father commanded before his death, saying,
17 'Thus you shall say to Joseph, "Please forgive, I beg you, the transgression of your brothers and their sin, for they did you wrong."' And now, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father." And Joseph wept when they spoke to him.17 So shall ye say unto Joseph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the trespass of thy brethren, and their sin; for they did unto thee evil: and now, we pray thee, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of thy father. And Joseph wept when they spake unto him.17 So shall ye say unto Joseph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the transgression of thy brethren, and their sin, for that they did unto thee evil. And now, we pray thee, forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of thy father. And Joseph wept when they spake unto him.17 That we should say thus much to thee from him: I beseech thee to forget the wickedness of thy brethren, and the sin and malice they practiced against thee: we also pray thee, to forgive the servants of the God of thy father this wickedness. And when Joseph heard this, he wept. 17 Thus ye do say to Joseph, I pray thee, bear, I pray thee, with the transgression of thy brethren, and their sin, for they have done thee evil; and now, bear, we pray thee, with the transgression of the servants of the God of thy father;' and Joseph weepeth in their speaking unto him.
18 Then his brothers also came and fell down before him and said, "Behold, we are your servants."18 And his brethren also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we be thy servants.18 And his brethren also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we are thy servants.18 And his brethren came to him: and worshipping prostrate on the ground they said: We are thy servants. 18 And his brethren also go and fall before him, and say, 'Lo, we are to thee for servants.'
19 But Joseph said to them, "Do not be afraid, for am I in God's place?19 And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God?19 And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God?19 And he answered them: Fear not: can we resist the will of God? 19 And Joseph saith unto them, 'Fear not, for am I in the place of God?
20 "As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive.20 But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.20 And as for you, ye meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.20 You thought evil against me: but God turned it into good, that he might exalt me, as at present you see, and might save many people. 20 As for you, ye devised against me evil -- God devised it for good, in order to do as at this day, to keep alive a numerous people;
NASBKJVASVDRBYLT
21 "So therefore, do not be afraid; I will provide for you and your little ones." So he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.21 Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spake kindly unto them.21 Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spake kindly unto them.21 Fear not: I will feed you and your children. And he comforted them, and spoke gently and mildly. 21 and now, fear not: I do nourish you and your infants;' and he comforteth them, and speaketh unto their heart.
Death of Joseph
22 Now Joseph stayed in Egypt, he and his father's household, and Joseph lived one hundred and ten years.22 And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he, and his father's house: and Joseph lived an hundred and ten years.22 And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he, and his father's house: and Joseph lived a hundred and ten years.22 And he dwelt in Egypt with all his father's house: and lived a hundred and ten years. 22 And Joseph dwelleth in Egypt, he and the house of his father, and Joseph liveth a hundred and ten years,
23 Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim's sons; also the sons of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were born on Joseph's knees.23 And Joseph saw Ephraim's children of the third generation: the children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were brought up upon Joseph's knees.23 And Joseph saw Ephraim's children of the third generation: the children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were born upon Joseph's knees.23 And he saw the children of Ephraim to the third generation. The children also of Machir the son of Ma-nasses were born on Joseph's knees. 23 and Joseph looketh on Ephraim's sons of the third generation; sons also of Machir, son of Manasseh, have been born on the knees of Joseph.
24 Joseph said to his brothers, "I am about to die, but God will surely take care of you and bring you up from this land to the land which He promised on oath to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob."24 And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die: and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.24 And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die; but God will surely visit you, and bring you up out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.24 After which he told his brethren: God will visit you after my death, and will make you go up out of this land, to the land which he swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 24 And Joseph saith unto his brethren, 'I am dying, and God doth certainly inspect you, and hath caused you to go up from this land, unto the land which He hath sworn to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.'
25 Then Joseph made the sons of Israel swear, saying, "God will surely take care of you, and you shall carry my bones up from here."25 And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence.25 And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence.25 And he made them swear to him, saying: God will visit you, Carry my bones with you out of this place: 25 And Joseph causeth the sons of Israel to swear, saying, 'God doth certainly inspect you, and ye have brought up my bones from this place.'
NASBKJVASVDRBYLT
26 So Joseph died at the age of one hundred and ten years; and he was embalmed and placed in a coffin in Egypt.26 So Joseph died, being an hundred and ten years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.26 So Joseph died, being a hundred and ten years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.26 And he died being a hundred and ten years old. And being embalmed he was laid in a coffin in Egypt.26 And Joseph dieth, a son of an hundred and ten years, and they embalm him, and he is put into a coffin in Egypt.
