| 1 Then Zophar the Naamathite answered, | 1 Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said, | 1 Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said, | 1 Then Sophar the Naamathite answered, and said: | 1 And Zophar the Naamathite answereth and saith: -- | 2 "Therefore my disquieting thoughts make me respond, Even because of my inward agitation. | 2 Therefore do my thoughts cause me to answer, and for this I make haste. | 2 Therefore do my thoughts give answer to me, Even by reason of my haste that is in me. | 2 Therefore various thoughts succeed one another in me, and my mind is hurried away to different things. | 2 Therefore my thoughts cause me to answer, And because of my sensations in me. | 3 "I listened to the reproof which insults me, And the spirit of my understanding makes me answer. | 3 I have heard the check of my reproach, and the spirit of my understanding causeth me to answer. | 3 I have heard the reproof which putteth me to shame; And the spirit of my understanding answereth me. | 3 The doctrine with which thou reprovest me, I will hear, and the spirit of my understanding shall answer for me. | 3 The chastisement of my shame I hear, And the spirit of mine understanding Doth cause me to answer: | 4 "Do you know this from of old, From the establishment of man on earth, | 4 Knowest thou not this of old, since man was placed upon earth, | 4 Knowest thou not this of old time, Since man was placed upon earth, | 4 This I know from the beginning, since man was placed upon the earth, | 4 This hast thou known from antiquity? Since the placing of man on earth? | 5 That the triumphing of the wicked is short, And the joy of the godless momentary? | 5 That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment? | 5 That the triumphing of the wicked is short, And the joy of the godless but for a moment? | 5 that the praise of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment. | 5 That the singing of the wicked is short, And the joy of the profane for a moment, | NASB | KJV | ASV | DRB | YLT |
| 6 "Though his loftiness reaches the heavens, And his head touches the clouds, | 6 Though his excellency mount up to the heavens, and his head reach unto the clouds; | 6 Though his height mount up to the heavens, And his head reach unto the clouds; | 6 If his pride mount up even to heaven, and his head touch the clouds: | 6 Though his excellency go up to the heavens, And his head against a cloud he strike -- | 7 He perishes forever like his refuse; Those who have seen him will say, 'Where is he?' | 7 Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung: they which have seen him shall say, Where is he? | 7 Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung: They that have seen him shall say, Where is he? | 7 In the end he shall be destroyed like a dunghill, and they that has seen him shall say: Where is he? | 7 As his own dung for ever he doth perish, His beholders say: 'Where is he?' | 8 "He flies away like a dream, and they cannot find him; Even like a vision of the night he is chased away. | 8 He shall fly away as a dream, and shall not be found: yea, he shall be chased away as a vision of the night. | 8 He shall fly away as a dream, and shall not be found: Yea, he shall be chased away as a vision of the night. | 8 As a dream that fleeth away he shall not be found, he shall pass as a vision of the night: | 8 As a dream he fleeth, and they find him not, And he is driven away as a vision of the night, | 9 "The eye which saw him sees him no longer, And his place no longer beholds him. | 9 The eye also which saw him shall see him no more; neither shall his place any more behold him. | 9 The eye which saw him shall see him no more; Neither shall his place any more behold him. | 9 The eyes that had seen him, shall see him no more, neither shall his place any more behold him. | 9 The eye hath not seen him, and addeth not. And not again doth his place behold him. | 10 "His sons favor the poor, And his hands give back his wealth. | 10 His children shall seek to please the poor, and his hands shall restore their goods. | 10 His children shall seek the favor of the poor, And his hands shall give back his wealth. | 10 His children shall be oppressed with want, and his hands shall render him his sorrow. | 10 His sons do the poor oppress, And his hands give back his wealth. | NASB | KJV | ASV | DRB | YLT |
| 11 "His bones are full of his youthful vigor, But it lies down with him in the dust. | 11 His bones are full of the sin of his youth, which shall lie down with him in the dust. | 11 His bones are full of his youth, But it shall lie down with him in the dust. | 11 His bones shall be filled with the vices of his youth, and they shall sleep with him in the dust. | 11 His bones have been full of his youth, And with him on the dust it lieth down. | 12 "Though evil is sweet in his mouth And he hides it under his tongue, | 12 Though wickedness be sweet in his mouth, though he hide it under his tongue; | 12 Though wickedness be sweet in his mouth, Though he hide it under his tongue, | 12 For when evil shall be sweet in his mouth, he will hide it under his tongue. | 12 Though he doth sweeten evil in his mouth, Doth hide it under his tongue, | 13 Though he desires it and will not let it go, But holds it in his mouth, | 13 Though he spare it, and forsake it not; but keep it still within his mouth: | 13 Though he spare it, and will not let it go, But keep it still within his mouth; | 13 He will spare it, and not leave it, and will hide it in his throat. | 13 Hath pity on it, and doth not forsake it, And keep it back in the midst of his palate, | 14 Yet his food in his stomach is changed To the venom of cobras within him. | 14 Yet his meat in his bowels is turned, it is the gall of asps within him. | 14 Yet his food in his bowels is turned, It is the gall of asps within him. | 14 His bread in his belly shall be turned into the gall of asps within him. | 14 His food in his bowels is turned, The bitterness of asps is in his heart. | 15 "He swallows riches, But will vomit them up; God will expel them from his belly. | 15 He hath swallowed down riches, and he shall vomit them up again: God shall cast them out of his belly. | 15 He hath swallowed down riches, and he shall vomit them up again; God will cast them out of his belly. | 15 The riches which he hath swallowed; he shall vomit up, and God shall draw them out of his belly. | 15 Wealth he hath swallowed, and doth vomit it. From his belly God driveth it out. | NASB | KJV | ASV | DRB | YLT |
| 16 "He sucks the poison of cobras; The viper's tongue slays him. | 16 He shall suck the poison of asps: the viper's tongue shall slay him. | 16 He shall suck the poison of asps: The viper's tongue shall slay him. | 16 He shall suck the head of asps, and the viper's tongue shall kill him. | 16 Gall of asps he sucketh, Slay him doth the tongue of a viper. | 17 "He does not look at the streams, The rivers flowing with honey and curds. | 17 He shall not see the rivers, the floods, the brooks of honey and butter. | 17 He shall not look upon the rivers, The flowing streams of honey and butter. | 17 (Let him not see the streams of the river, the brooks of honey and of butter.) | 17 He looketh not on rivulets, Flowing of brooks of honey and butter. | 18 "He returns what he has attained And cannot swallow it; As to the riches of his trading, He cannot even enjoy them. | 18 That which he laboured for shall he restore, and shall not swallow it down: according to his substance shall the restitution be, and he shall not rejoice therein. | 18 That which he labored for shall he restore, and shall not swallow it down; According to the substance that he hath gotten, he shall not rejoice. | 18 He shall be punished for all that he did, and yet shall not be consumed: according to the multitude of his devices so also shall he suffer. | 18 He is giving back what he laboured for, And doth not consume it; As a bulwark is his exchange, and he exults not. | 19 "For he has oppressed and forsaken the poor; He has seized a house which he has not built. | 19 Because he hath oppressed and hath forsaken the poor; because he hath violently taken away an house which he builded not; | 19 For he hath oppressed and forsaken the poor; He hath violently taken away a house, and he shall not build it up. | 19 Because he broke in and stripped the poor: he hath violently taken away a house which he did not build. | 19 For he oppressed -- he forsook the poor, A house he hath taken violently away, And he doth not build it. | 20 "Because he knew no quiet within him, He does not retain anything he desires. | 20 Surely he shall not feel quietness in his belly, he shall not save of that which he desired. | 20 Because he knew no quietness within him, He shall not save aught of that wherein he delighteth. | 20 And yet his belly was not filled: and when he hath the things he coveted, he shall not be able to possess them. | 20 For he hath not known ease in his belly. With his desirable thing he delivereth not himself. | NASB | KJV | ASV | DRB | YLT |
| 21 "Nothing remains for him to devour, Therefore his prosperity does not endure. | 21 There shall none of his meat be left; therefore shall no man look for his goods. | 21 There was nothing left that he devoured not; Therefore his prosperity shall not endure. | 21 There was nothing left of his meat, and therefore nothing shall continue of his goods: | 21 There is not a remnant to his food, Therefore his good doth not stay. | 22 "In the fullness of his plenty he will be cramped; The hand of everyone who suffers will come against him. | 22 In the fulness of his sufficiency he shall be in straits: every hand of the wicked shall come upon him. | 22 In the fulness of his sufficiency he shall be in straits: The hand of every one that is in misery shall come upon him. | 22 When he shall be filled, he shall be straitened, he shall burn, and every sorrow shall fall upon him. | 22 In the fulness of his sufficiency he is straitened. Every perverse hand doth meet him. | 23 "When he fills his belly, God will send His fierce anger on him And will rain it on him while he is eating. | 23 When he is about to fill his belly, God shall cast the fury of his wrath upon him, and shall rain it upon him while he is eating. | 23 When he is about to fill his belly, God will cast the fierceness of his wrath upon him, And will rain it upon him while he is eating. | 23 May his belly be filled, that God may send forth the wrath of his indignation upon him, and rain down his war upon him. | 23 It cometh to pass, at the filling of his belly, He sendeth forth against him The fierceness of His anger, Yea, He raineth on him in his eating. | 24 "He may flee from the iron weapon, But the bronze bow will pierce him. | 24 He shall flee from the iron weapon, and the bow of steel shall strike him through. | 24 He shall flee from the iron weapon, And the bow of brass shall strike him through. | 24 He shall flee from weapons of iron, and shall fall upon a bow of brass. | 24 He fleeth from an iron weapon, Pass through him doth a bow of brass. | 25 "It is drawn forth and comes out of his back, Even the glittering point from his gall. Terrors come upon him, | 25 It is drawn, and cometh out of the body; yea, the glittering sword cometh out of his gall: terrors are upon him. | 25 He draweth it forth, and it cometh out of his body; Yea, the glittering point cometh out of his gall: Terrors are upon him. | 25 The sword is drawn out, and cometh forth from its scabbard, and glittereth in his bitterness: the terrible ones shall go and come upon him. | 25 One hath drawn, And it cometh out from the body, And a glittering weapon from his gall proceedeth. On him are terrors. | NASB | KJV | ASV | DRB | YLT |
| 26 Complete darkness is held in reserve for his treasures, And unfanned fire will devour him; It will consume the survivor in his tent. | 26 All darkness shall be hid in his secret places: a fire not blown shall consume him; it shall go ill with him that is left in his tabernacle. | 26 All darkness is laid up for his treasures: A fire not blown by man'shall devour him; It shall consume that which is left in his tent. | 26 All darkness is hid in his secret places: a fire that is not kindled shall devour him, he shall be afflicted when left in his tabernacle. | 26 All darkness is hid for his treasures, Consume him doth a fire not blown, Broken is the remnant in his tent. | 27 "The heavens will reveal his iniquity, And the earth will rise up against him. | 27 The heaven shall reveal his iniquity; and the earth shall rise up against him. | 27 The heavens shall reveal his iniquity, And the earth shall rise up against him. | 27 The heavens shall reveal his iniquity, and the earth shall rise up against him. | 27 Reveal do the heavens his iniquity, And earth is raising itself against him. | 28 "The increase of his house will depart; His possessions will flow away in the day of His anger. | 28 The increase of his house shall depart, and his goods shall flow away in the day of his wrath. | 28 The increase of his house shall depart; His goods'shall flow away in the day of his wrath. | 28 The offspring of his house shall be exposed, he shall be pulled down in the day of God's wrath. | 28 Remove doth the increase of his house, Poured forth in a day of His anger. | 29 "This is the wicked man's portion from God, Even the heritage decreed to him by God." | 29 This is the portion of a wicked man from God, and the heritage appointed unto him by God. | 29 This is the portion of a wicked man from God, And the heritage appointed unto him by God. | 29 This is the portion of a wicked man from God, and the inheritance of his doings from the Lord. | 29 This is the portion of a wicked man from God. And an inheritance appointed him by God. |
