NASB | KJV | ASV | DRB | YLT |
| 1 Then Job continued his discourse and said, | 1 Moreover Job continued his parable, and said, | 1 And Job again took up his parable, and said, | 1 Job also added, taking up his parable, and said: | 1 And Job addeth to lift up his simile, and saith: -- | 2 "As God lives, who has taken away my right, And the Almighty, who has embittered my soul, | 2 As God liveth, who hath taken away my judgment; and the Almighty, who hath vexed my soul; | 2 As God liveth, who hath taken away my right, And the Almighty, who hath vexed my soul: | 2 As God liveth, who hath taken away my judgment, and the Almighty, who hath brought my soul to bitterness, | 2 God liveth! He turned aside my judgment, And the Mighty -- He made my soul bitter. | 3 For as long as life is in me, And the breath of God is in my nostrils, | 3 All the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils; | 3 (For my life is yet whole in me, And the spirit of God is in my nostrils); | 3 As long as breath remaineth in me, and the spirit of God in my nostrils, | 3 For all the while my breath is in me, And the spirit of God in my nostrils. | 4 My lips certainly will not speak unjustly, Nor will my tongue mutter deceit. | 4 My lips shall not speak wickedness, nor my tongue utter deceit. | 4 Surely my lips shall not speak unrighteousness, Neither shall my tongue utter deceit. | 4 My lips shall not speak iniquity, neither shall my tongue contrive lying. | 4 My lips do not speak perverseness, And my tongue doth not utter deceit. | 5 "Far be it from me that I should declare you right; Till I die I will not put away my integrity from me. | 5 God forbid that I should justify you: till I die I will not remove mine integrity from me. | 5 Far be it from me that I should justify you: Till I die I will not put away mine integrity from me. | 5 God forbid that I should judge you to be just: till I die I will not depart from my innocence. | 5 Pollution to me -- if I justify you, Till I expire I turn not aside mine integrity from me. | NASB | KJV | ASV | DRB | YLT |
| 6 "I hold fast my righteousness and will not let it go. My heart does not reproach any of my days. | 6 My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go: my heart shall not reproach me so long as I live. | 6 My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go: My heart shall not reproach me'so long as I live. | 6 My justification, which I have begun to hold, I will not forsake: for my heart doth not reprehend me in all my life. | 6 On my righteousness I have laid hold, And I do not let it go, My heart doth not reproach me while I live. | The State of the Godless |
| 7 "May my enemy be as the wicked And my opponent as the unjust. | 7 Let mine enemy be as the wicked, and he that riseth up against me as the unrighteous. | 7 Let mine enemy be as the wicked, And let him that riseth up against me be as the unrighteous. | 7 Let my enemy be as the ungodly, and my adversary as the wicked one. | 7 As the wicked is my enemy, And my withstander as the perverse. | 8 "For what is the hope of the godless when he is cut off, When God requires his life? | 8 For what is the hope of the hypocrite, though he hath gained, when God taketh away his soul? | 8 For what is the hope of the godless, though he get him gain, When God taketh away his soul? | 8 For what is the hope of the hypocrite if through covetousness he take by violence, and God deliver not his soul? | 8 For what is the hope of the profane, When He doth cut off? When God doth cast off his soul? | 9 "Will God hear his cry When distress comes upon him? | 9 Will God hear his cry when trouble cometh upon him? | 9 Will God hear his cry, When trouble cometh upon him? | 9 Will God hear his cry, when distress shall come upon him? | 9 His cry doth God hear, When distress cometh on him? | 10 "Will he take delight in the Almighty? Will he call on God at all times? | 10 Will he delight himself in the Almighty? will he always call upon God? | 10 Will he delight himself in the Almighty, And call upon God at all times? | 10 Or can he delight himself in the Almighty, and call upon God at all times? | 10 On the Mighty doth he delight himself? Call God at all times? | NASB | KJV | ASV | DRB | YLT |
| 11 "I will instruct you in the power of God; What is with the Almighty I will not conceal. | 11 I will teach you by the hand of God: that which is with the Almighty will I not conceal. | 11 I will teach you concerning the hand of God; That which is with the Almighty will I not conceal. | 11 I will teach you by the hand of God, what the Almighty hath, and I will not conceal it. | 11 I shew you by the hand of God, That which is with the Mighty I hide not. | 12 "Behold, all of you have seen it; Why then do you act foolishly? | 12 Behold, all ye yourselves have seen it; why then are ye thus altogether vain? | 12 Behold, all ye yourselves have seen it; Why then are ye become altogether vain? | 12 Behold you all know it, and why do you speak vain things without cause? | 12 Lo, ye -- all of you -- have seen, And why is this -- ye are altogether vain? | 13 "This is the portion of a wicked man from God, And the inheritance which tyrants receive from the Almighty. | 13 This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the heritage of oppressors, which they shall receive of the Almighty. | 13 This is the portion of a wicked man with God, And the heritage of oppressors, which they receive from the Almighty: | 13 This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the inheritance of the violent, which they shall receive of the Almighty. | 13 This is the portion of wicked man with God, And the inheritance of terrible ones From the Mighty they receive. | 14 "Though his sons are many, they are destined for the sword; And his descendants will not be satisfied with bread. | 14 If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword: and his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread. | 14 If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword; And his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread. | 14 If his sons be multiplied, they shall be for the sword, and his grandsons shall not be filled with bread. | 14 If his sons multiply -- for them is a sword. And his offspring are not satisfied with bread. | 15 "His survivors will be buried because of the plague, And their widows will not be able to weep. | 15 Those that remain of him shall be buried in death: and his widows shall not weep. | 15 Those that remain of him shall be buried in death, And his widows shall make no lamentation. | 15 They that shall remain of him, shall be buried in death, and his widows shall not weep. | 15 His remnant in death are buried, And his widows do not weep. | NASB | KJV | ASV | DRB | YLT |
| 16 "Though he piles up silver like dust And prepares garments as plentiful as the clay, | 16 Though he heap up silver as the dust, and prepare raiment as the clay; | 16 Though he heap up silver as the dust, And prepare raiment as the clay; | 16 If he shall heap together silver as earth, and prepare raiment as clay, | 16 If he heap up as dust silver, And as clay prepare clothing, | 17 He may prepare it, but the just will wear it And the innocent will divide the silver. | 17 He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver. | 17 He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, And the innocent shall divide the silver. | 17 He shall prepare indeed, but the just man shall be clothed with it: and the innocent shall divide the silver. | 17 He prepareth -- and the righteous putteth it on, And the silver the innocent doth apportion. | 18 "He has built his house like the spider's web, Or as a hut which the watchman has made. | 18 He buildeth his house as a moth, and as a booth that the keeper maketh. | 18 He buildeth his house as the moth, And as a booth which the keeper maketh. | 18 He hath built his house as a moth, and as a keeper he hath made a booth. | 18 He hath built as a moth his house, And as a booth a watchman hath made. | 19 "He lies down rich, but never again; He opens his eyes, and it is no longer. | 19 The rich man shall lie down, but he shall not be gathered: he openeth his eyes, and he is not. | 19 He lieth down rich, but he shall not be gathered to his fathers ; He openeth his eyes, and he is not. | 19 The rich man when he shall sleep shall take away nothing with him: he shall open his eyes and find nothing. | 19 Rich he lieth down, and he is not gathered, His eyes he hath opened, and he is not. | 20 "Terrors overtake him like a flood; A tempest steals him away in the night. | 20 Terrors take hold on him as waters, a tempest stealeth him away in the night. | 20 Terrors overtake him like waters; A tempest stealeth him away in the night. | 20 Poverty like water shall take hold on him, a tempest shall oppress him in the night. | 20 Overtake him as waters do terrors, By night stolen him away hath a whirlwind. | NASB | KJV | ASV | DRB | YLT |
| 21 "The east wind carries him away, and he is gone, For it whirls him away from his place. | 21 The east wind carrieth him away, and he departeth: and as a storm hurleth him out of his place. | 21 The east wind carrieth him away, and he departeth; And it sweepeth him out of his place. | 21 A burning wind shall take him up, and carry him away, and as a whirlwind shall snatch him from his place. | 21 Take him up doth an east wind, and he goeth, And it frighteneth him from his place, | 22 "For it will hurl at him without sparing; He will surely try to flee from its power. | 22 For God shall cast upon him, and not spare: he would fain flee out of his hand. | 22 For God'shall hurl at him, and not spare: He would fain flee out of his hand. | 22 And he shall cast upon him, and shall not spare: out of his hand he would willingly flee. | 22 And it casteth at him, and doth not spare, From its hand he diligently fleeth. | 23 "Men will clap their hands at him And will hiss him from his place. | 23 Men shall clap their hands at him, and shall hiss him out of his place. | 23 Men shall clap their hands at him, And shall hiss him out of his place. | 23 He shall clasp his hands upon him, and shall hiss at him, beholding his place. | 23 It clappeth at him its hands, And it hisseth at him from his place. |
