Eliphaz: Innocent Do Not Suffer

1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered,1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,1 Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,1 Then Eliphaz the Themanite answered, and said: 1 And Eliphaz the Temanite answereth and saith: --
2 "If one ventures a word with you, will you become impatient? But who can refrain from speaking?2 If we assay to commune with thee, wilt thou be grieved? but who can withhold himself from speaking?2 If one assay to commune with thee, wilt thou be grieved? But who can withhold himself from speaking?2 If we begin to speak to thee, perhaps thou wilt take it ill, but who can withhold the words he hath conceived? 2 Hath one tried a word with thee? -- Thou art weary! And to keep in words who is able?
3 "Behold you have admonished many, And you have strengthened weak hands.3 Behold, thou hast instructed many, and thou hast strengthened the weak hands.3 Behold, thou hast instructed many, And thou hast strengthened the weak hands.3 Behold thou hast taught many, and thou hast strengthened the weary hands: 3 Lo, thou hast instructed many, And feeble hands thou makest strong.
4 "Your words have helped the tottering to stand, And you have strengthened feeble knees.4 Thy words have upholden him that was falling, and thou hast strengthened the feeble knees.4 Thy words have upholden him that was falling, And thou hast made firm the feeble knees.4 Thy words have confirmed them that were staggering, and thou hast strengthened the trembling knees: 4 The stumbling one do thy words raise up, And bowing knees thou dost strengthen.
5 "But now it has come to you, and you are impatient; It touches you, and you are dismayed.5 But now it is come upon thee, and thou faintest; it toucheth thee, and thou art troubled.5 But now it is come unto thee, and thou faintest; It toucheth thee, and thou art troubled.5 But now the scourge is come upon thee, and thou faintest: it hath touched thee, and thou art troubled. 5 But now, it cometh in unto thee, And thou art weary; It striketh unto thee, and thou art troubled.

6 "Is not your fear of God your confidence, And the integrity of your ways your hope?6 Is not this thy fear, thy confidence, thy hope, and the uprightness of thy ways?6 Is not thy fear of God thy confidence, And the integrity of thy ways thy hope?6 Where is thy fear, thy fortitude, thy patience, and the perfection of thy ways? 6 Is not thy reverence thy confidence? Thy hope -- the perfection of thy ways?
7 "Remember now, who ever perished being innocent? Or where were the upright destroyed?7 Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? or where were the righteous cut off?7 Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? Or where were the upright cut off?7 Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished being innocent? or when were the just destroyed? 7 Remember, I pray thee, Who, being innocent, hath perished? And where have the upright been cut off?
8 "According to what I have seen, those who plow iniquity And those who sow trouble harvest it.8 Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same.8 According as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, And sow trouble, reap the same.8 On the contrary I have seen those who work iniquity, and sow sorrows, and reap them, 8 As I have seen -- ploughers of iniquity, And sowers of misery, reap it!
9 "By the breath of God they perish, And by the blast of His anger they come to an end.9 By the blast of God they perish, and by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed.9 By the breath of God they perish, And by the blast of his anger are they consumed.9 Perishing by the blast of God, and consumed by the spirit of his wrath. 9 From the breath of God they perish, And from the spirit of His anger consumed.
10 "The roaring of the lion and the voice of the fierce lion, And the teeth of the young lions are broken.10 The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken.10 The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, And the teeth of the young lions, are broken.10 The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the lioness, and the teeth of the whelps of lions are broken: 10 The roaring of a lion, And the voice of a fierce lion, And teeth of young lions have been broken.

13 "Amid disquieting thoughts from the visions of the night, When deep sleep falls on men,13 In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men,13 In thoughts from the visions of the night, When deep sleep falleth on men,13 In the horror of a vision by night, when deep sleep is wont to hold men, 13 In thoughts from visions of the night, In the falling of deep sleep on men,
14 Dread came upon me, and trembling, And made all my bones shake.14 Fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones to shake.14 Fear came upon me, and trembling, Which made all my bones to shake.14 Fear seized upon me, and trembling, and all my bones were affrighted: 14 Fear hath met me, and trembling, And the multitude of my bones caused to fear.
15 "Then a spirit passed by my face; The hair of my flesh bristled up.15 Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up:15 Then a spirit passed before my face; The hair of my flesh stood up.15 And when a spirit passed before me, the hair of my flesh stood up. 15 And a spirit before my face doth pass, Stand up doth the hair of my flesh;

17 'Can mankind be just before God? Can a man be pure before his Maker?17 Shall mortal man be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his maker?17 Shall mortal man be more just than God? Shall a man be more pure than his Maker?17 Shall man be justified in comparison of God, or shall a man be more pure than his maker? 17 'Is mortal man than God more righteous? Than his Maker is a man cleaner?
18 'He puts no trust even in His servants; And against His angels He charges error.18 Behold, he put no trust in his servants; and his angels he charged with folly:18 Behold, he putteth no trust in his servants; And his angels he chargeth with folly:18 Behold they that serve him are not steadfast, and in his angels he found wickedness: 18 Lo, in His servants He putteth no credence, Nor in His messengers setteth praise.'
19 'How much more those who dwell in houses of clay, Whose foundation is in the dust, Who are crushed before the moth!19 How much less in them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, which are crushed before the moth?19 How much more them that dwell in houses of clay, Whose foundation is in the dust, Who are crushed before the moth!19 How much more shall they that dwell in houses of clay, who have an earthly foundation, be consumed as with the moth? 19 Also -- the inhabitants of houses of clay, (Whose foundation is in the dust, They bruise them before a moth.)
20 'Between morning and evening they are broken in pieces; Unobserved, they perish forever.20 They are destroyed from morning to evening: they perish for ever without any regarding it.20 Betwixt morning and evening they are destroyed: They perish for ever without any regarding it.20 From morning till evening they shall be cut down: and because no one understandeth, they shall perish for ever. 20 From morning to evening are beaten down, Without any regarding, for ever they perish.

21 'Is not their tent-cord plucked up within them? They die, yet without wisdom.'21 Doth not their excellency which is in them go away? they die, even without wisdom.21 Is not their tent-cord plucked up within them? They die, and that without wisdom.21 And they that shall be left, shall be taken away from them: they shall die, and not in wisdom. 21 Hath not their excellency been removed with them? They die, and not in wisdom!
