King James Version: The word of the LORD that came to Joel the son of Pethuel. Bible in Basic English: The word of the Lord which came to Joel, the son of Pethuel. JPS Old Testament: The word of the LORD that came to Joel the son of Pethuel. World English Bible: The Word of Yahweh that came to Joel, the son of Pethuel. Alphabetical: came Joel LORD of Pethuel son that The to word GSB: 1:1 The word of the LORD that came to Joel the son of Pethuel. The Argument - The Prophet Joel first rebukes those of Judah, that being now punished with a great plague of famine, still remain obstinate. Secondly, he threatens greater plagues, because they grow daily to a more hardness of heart and rebellion against God in spite of his punishments. Thirdly, he exhorts them to repentance, showing that it must be earnest, and proceed from the heart, because they had grievously offended God. And in doing this, Joel promises that God will be merciful, and not forget his covenant that he made with their fathers, but will send his Christ, who will gather the scattered sheep, and restore them to life and liberty, even though they seem to be dead. WES: 1:1 Came to Joel - Probably in the latter end of Jeroboam the second's reign over Israel and in the days of Uzziah, over Judah. MHC: 1:1-7 The most aged could not remember such calamities as were about to take place. Armies of insects were coming upon the land to eat the fruits of it. It is expressed so as to apply also to the destruction of the country by a foreign enemy, and seems to refer to the devastations of the Chaldeans. God is Lord of hosts, has every creature at his command, and, when he pleases, can humble and mortify a proud, rebellious people, by the weakest and most contemptible creatures. It is just with God to take away the comforts which are abused to luxury and excess; and the more men place their happiness in the gratifications of sense, the more severe temporal afflictions are upon them. The more earthly delights we make needful to satisfy us, the more we expose ourselves to trouble. Joel 1:2 New American Standard Bible: Hear this, O elders, And listen, all inhabitants of the land. Strong - Mighty in power, and undaunted in courage, if you refer it to the Assyrian or Babylonians; if to those vermin, they are, though each weak by itself, yet in those multitudes, strong and irresistible. A great lion - Such waste as lions make, these the locusts do, and the Assyrians will make. MHC: Joel 1:7 New American Standard Bible: It has made my vine a waste And my fig tree splinters. MHC: 1:8-13 All who labour only for the meat that perishes, will, sooner or later, be ashamed of their labour. Those that place their happiness in the delights of sense, when deprived of them, or disturbed in the enjoyment, lose their joy; whereas spiritual joy then flourishes more than ever. See what perishing, uncertain things our creature-comforts are. See how we need to live in continual dependence upon God and his providence. See what ruinous work sin makes. As far as poverty occasions the decay of piety, and starves the cause of religion among a people, it is a very sore judgment. But how blessed are the awakening judgments of God, in rousing his people and calling home the heart to Christ, and his salvation! Joel 1:9 New American Standard Bible: The grain offering and the drink offering are cut off From the house of the LORD. The priests mourn, The ministers of the LORD. WES: 1:9 The drink - offering - By the destruction of the vines, all wine (out of which they ought to offer the drink - offering) failed. MHC: Joel 1:10 New American Standard Bible: The field is ruined, The land mourns; For the grain is ruined, The new wine dries up, Fresh oil fails. God's Word Translation: Israel's fields are ruined, and the ground is dried up. The grain has been destroyed. The new wine has dried up. The olive oil has run out. King James Version: The field is wasted, the land mourneth; for the corn is wasted: the new wine is dried up, the oil languisheth. Bible in Basic English: The fields are wasted, the land has become dry; for the grain is wasted, the new wine is kept back, the oil is poor. JPS Old Testament: The field is wasted, the land mourneth; for the corn is wasted, the new wine is dried up, the oil languisheth. World English Bible: The field is laid waste. (h) He shows that the only means to avoid God's wrath, and to have all things restored, is true repentance. Into the house - The courts of the temple, where the people were wont to pray. MHC: 1:14-20 The sorrow of the people is turned into repentance and humiliation before God. With all the marks of sorrow and shame, sin must be confessed and bewailed. A day is to be appointed for this purpose; a day in which people must be kept from their common employments, that they may more closely attend God's services; and there is to be abstaining from meat and drink. Every one had added to the national guilt, all shared in the national calamity, therefore every one must join in repentance. When joy and gladness are cut off from God's house, when serious godliness decays, and love waxes cold, then it is time to cry unto the Lord. The prophet describes how grievous the calamity. See even the inferior creatures suffering for our transgression. And what better are they than beasts, who never cry to God but for corn and wine, and complain of the want of the delights of sense? Yet their crying to God in those cases, shames the stupidity of those who cry not to God in any case. Whatever may become of the nations and churches that persist in ungodliness, believers will find the comfort of acceptance with God, when the wicked shall be burned up with his indignation. Joel 1:15 New American Standard Bible: Alas for the day! For the day of the LORD is near, And it will come as destruction from the Almighty. God's Word Translation: This will be a terrible day!
