The Preaching of John the Baptist
NASBKJVASVDRBYLT
1 Now in those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying,1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,1 And in those days cometh John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, saying,1 AND in those days cometh John the Baptist preaching in the desert of Judea. 1 And in those days cometh John the Baptist, proclaiming in the wilderness of Judea,
2 "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.2 Repent ye; for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.2 And saying: Do penance: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 2 and saying, 'Reform, for come nigh hath the reign of the heavens,'
3 For this is the one referred to by Isaiah the prophet when he said, "THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS, 'MAKE READY THE WAY OF THE LORD, MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT!'"3 For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.3 For this is he that was spoken of through Isaiah the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make ye ready the way of the Lord, Make his paths straight.3 For this is he that was spoken of by Isaias the prophet, saying: A voice of one crying in the desert, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. 3 for this is he who was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying, 'A voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, straight make ye His paths.'
4 Now John himself had a garment of camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey.4 And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.4 Now John himself had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his food was locusts and wild honey.4 And the same John had his garment of camels' hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins: and his meat was locusts and wild honey. 4 And this John had his clothing of camel's hair, and a girdle of skin round his loins, and his nourishment was locusts and honey of the field.
5 Then Jerusalem was going out to him, and all Judea and all the district around the Jordan;5 Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,5 Then went out unto him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about the Jordan;5 Then went out to him Jerusalem and all Judea, and all the country about Jordan: 5 Then were going forth unto him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the region round about the Jordan,
NASBKJVASVDRBYLT
6 and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, as they confessed their sins.6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.6 and they were baptized of him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.6 And were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins. 6 and they were baptized in the Jordan by him, confessing their sins.
7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said unto them, Ye offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?7 And seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them: Ye brood of vipers, who hath shewed you to flee from the wrath to come? 7 And having seen many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming about his baptism, he said to them, 'Brood of vipers! who did shew you to flee from the coming wrath?
8 "Therefore bear fruit in keeping with repentance;8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:8 Bring forth therefore fruit worthy of repentance:8 Bring forth therefore fruit worthy of penance. 8 bear, therefore, fruits worthy of the reformation,
9 and do not suppose that you can say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham for our father'; for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children to Abraham.9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.9 and think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father. For I tell you that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham. 9 and do not think to say in yourselves, A father we have -- Abraham, for I say to you, that God is able out of these stones to raise children to Abraham,
10 "The axe is already laid at the root of the trees; therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.10 And even now the axe lieth at the root of the trees: every tree therefore that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.10 For now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that doth not yield good fruit, shall be cut down, and cast into the fire. 10 and now also, the axe unto the root of the trees is laid, every tree therefore not bearing good fruit is hewn down, and to fire is cast.
NASBKJVASVDRBYLT
11 "As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:11 I indeed baptize you in water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit and in fire:11 I indeed baptize you in the water unto penance, but he that shall come after me, is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear; he shall baptize you in the Holy Ghost and fire. 11 'I indeed do baptize you with water to reformation, but he who after me is coming is mightier than I, of whom I am not worthy to bear the sandals, he shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire,
12 "His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear His threshing floor; and He will gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire."12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.12 whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing-floor; and he will gather his wheat into the garner, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his floor and gather his wheat into the barn; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. 12 whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his floor, and will gather his wheat to the storehouse, but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.'
The Baptism of Jesus
13 Then Jesus arrived from Galilee at the Jordan coming to John, to be baptized by him.13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan, unto John, to be baptized by him. 13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee upon the Jordan, unto John to be baptized by him,
14 But John tried to prevent Him, saying, "I have need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?"14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?14 But John would have hindered him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?14 But John stayed him, saying: I ought to be baptized by thee, and comest thou to me? 14 but John was forbidding him, saying, 'I have need by thee to be baptized -- and thou dost come unto me!'
15 But Jesus answering said to him, "Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he permitted Him.15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.15 But Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffereth him.15 And Jesus answering, said to him: Suffer it to be so now. For so it becometh us to fulfill all justice. Then he suffered him. 15 But Jesus answering said to him, 'Suffer now, for thus it is becoming to us to fulfil all righteousness,' then he doth suffer him.
NASBKJVASVDRBYLT
16 After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him,16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:16 And Jesus when he was baptized, went up straightway from the water: and lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him;16 And Jesus being baptized, forthwith came out of the water: and lo, the heavens were opened to him: and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him. 16 And having been baptized, Jesus went up immediately from the water, and lo, opened to him were the heavens, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him,
17 and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased."17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.17 and lo, a voice out of the heavens, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.17 And behold a voice from heaven, saying: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. 17 and lo, a voice out of the heavens, saying, 'This is My Son -- the Beloved, in whom I did delight.'
