| 1 "Oh that you were like a brother to me Who nursed at my mother's breasts. If I found you outdoors, I would kiss you; No one would despise me, either. | 1 O that thou wert as my brother, that sucked the breasts of my mother! when I should find thee without, I would kiss thee; yea, I should not be despised. | 1 Oh that thou wert as my brother, That sucked the breasts of my mother! When I should find thee without, I would kiss thee; Yea, and none would despise me. | 1 Who shall give thee to me for my brother, sucking the breasts of my mother, that I may find thee without, and kiss thee, and now no man may despise me? | 1 Who doth make thee as a brother to me, Sucking the breasts of my mother? I find thee without, I kiss thee, Yea, they do not despise me, | 2 "I would lead you and bring you Into the house of my mother, who used to instruct me; I would give you spiced wine to drink from the juice of my pomegranates. | 2 I would lead thee, and bring thee into my mother's house, who would instruct me: I would cause thee to drink of spiced wine of the juice of my pomegranate. | 2 I would lead thee, and bring thee into my mother's house, Who would instruct me; I would cause thee to drink of spiced wine, Of the juice of my pomegranate. | 2 I will take hold of thee, and bring thee Into my mother's house: there thou shalt teach me, and I will give thee a cup of spiced wine and new wine of my pomegranates. | 2 I lead thee, I bring thee in unto my mother's house, She doth teach me, I cause thee to drink of the perfumed wine, Of the juice of my pomegranate, | 3 "Let his left hand be under my head And his right hand embrace me." | 3 His left hand should be under my head, and his right hand should embrace me. | 3 His left hand'should be under my head, And his right hand should embrace me. | 3 His left hand under my head, and his right hand shall embrace me. | 3 His left hand is under my head, And his right doth embrace me. | 4 "I want you to swear, O daughters of Jerusalem, Do not arouse or awaken my love Until she pleases." | 4 I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem, that ye stir not up, nor awake my love, until he please. | 4 I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem, That ye stir not up, nor awake my love, Until he please. | 4 I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem, that you stir not up, nor awake my love till she please. | 4 I have adjured you, daughters of Jerusalem, How ye stir up, And how ye wake the love till she please! | 5 "Who is this coming up from the wilderness Leaning on her beloved?" "Beneath the apple tree I awakened you; There your mother was in labor with you, There she was in labor and gave you birth. | 5 Who is this that cometh up from the wilderness, leaning upon her beloved? I raised thee up under the apple tree: there thy mother brought thee forth: there she brought thee forth that bare thee. | 5 Who is this that cometh up from the wilderness, Leaning upon her beloved? Under the apple-tree I awakened thee: There thy mother was in travail with thee, There was she in travail that brought thee forth. | 5 Who is this that cometh up from the desert, flowing with delights, leaning upon her beloved? Under the apple tree I raised thee up: there thy mother was corrupted, there she was defloured that bore thee. | 5 Who is this coming from the wilderness, Hasting herself for her beloved? Under the citron-tree I have waked thee, There did thy mother pledge thee, There she gave a pledge that bare thee. | NASB | KJV | ASV | DRB | YLT |
| 6 "Put me like a seal over your heart, Like a seal on your arm. For love is as strong as death, Jealousy is as severe as Sheol; Its flashes are flashes of fire, The very flame of the LORD. | 6 Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame. | 6 Set me as a seal upon thy heart, As a seal upon thine arm: For love is strong as death; Jealousy is cruel as Sheol; The flashes thereof are flashes of fire, A very flame of Jehovah. | 6 Put me as a seal upon thy heart, as a seal upon thy arm, for love is strong as death, jealousy as hard as hell, the lamps thereof are fire and flames. | 6 Set me as a seal on thy heart, as a seal on thine arm, For strong as death is love, Sharp as Sheol is jealousy, Its burnings are burnings of fire, a flame of Jah! | 7 "Many waters cannot quench love, Nor will rivers overflow it; If a man were to give all the riches of his house for love, It would be utterly despised." | 7 Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned. | 7 Many waters cannot quench love, Neither can floods drown it: If a man would give all the substance of his house for love, He would utterly be contemned. | 7 Many waters cannot quench charity, neither can the floods drown it: if a man should give all the substance of his house for love, he shall despise it as nothing. | 7 Many waters are not able to quench the love, And floods do not wash it away. If one give all the wealth of his house for love, Treading down -- they tread upon it. | 8 "We have a little sister, And she has no breasts; What shall we do for our sister On the day when she is spoken for? | 8 We have a little sister, and she hath no breasts: what shall we do for our sister in the day when she shall be spoken for? | 8 We have a little sister, And she hath no breasts: What shall we do for our sister In the day when she shall be spoken for? | 8 Our sister is little, and hath no breasts. What shall we do to our sister in the day when she is to be spoken to? | 8 We have a little sister, and breasts she hath not, What do we do for our sister, In the day that it is told of her? | 9 "If she is a wall, We will build on her a battlement of silver; But if she is a door, We will barricade her with planks of cedar." | 9 If she be a wall, we will build upon her a palace of silver: and if she be a door, we will inclose her with boards of cedar. | 9 If she be a wall, We will build upon her a turret of silver: And if she be a door, We will inclose her with boards of cedar. | 9 If she be a wall: let us build upon it bulwarks of silver: if she be a door, let us join it together with boards or cedar. | 9 If she is a wall, we build by her a palace of silver. And if she is a door, We fashion by her board-work of cedar. | 10 "I was a wall, and my breasts were like towers; Then I became in his eyes as one who finds peace. | 10 I am a wall, and my breasts like towers: then was I in his eyes as one that found favour. | 10 I am a wall, and my breasts like the towers thereof Then was I in his eyes as one that found peace. | 10 I am a wall: and my breasts are as a tower since I am become in his presence as one finding peace. | 10 I am a wall, and my breasts as towers, Then I have been in his eyes as one finding peace. | NASB | KJV | ASV | DRB | YLT |
| 11 "Solomon had a vineyard at Baal-hamon; He entrusted the vineyard to caretakers. Each one was to bring a thousand shekels of silver for its fruit. | 11 Solomon had a vineyard at Baalhamon; he let out the vineyard unto keepers; every one for the fruit thereof was to bring a thousand pieces of silver. | 11 Solomon had a vineyard at Baal-hamon; He let out the vineyard unto keepers; Every one for the fruit thereof was to bring a thousand pieces of silver. | 11 The peaceable had a vineyard, in that which hath people: he let out the same to keepers, every man bringeth for the fruit thereof a thousand pieces of silver. | 11 Solomon hath a vineyard in Baal-Hamon, He hath given the vineyard to keepers, Each bringeth for its fruit a thousand silverlings; | 12 "My very own vineyard is at my disposal; The thousand shekels are for you, Solomon, And two hundred are for those who take care of its fruit." | 12 My vineyard, which is mine, is before me: thou, O Solomon, must have a thousand, and those that keep the fruit thereof two hundred. | 12 My vineyard, which is mine, is before me: Thou, O Solomon, shalt have the thousand, And those that keep the fruit thereof two hundred. | 12 My vineyard is before me. A thousand are for thee, the peaceable, and two hundred for them that keep the fruit thereof. | 12 My vineyard -- my own -- is before me, The thousand is for thee, O Solomon. And the two hundred for those keeping its fruit. O dweller in gardens! | 13 "O you who sit in the gardens, My companions are listening for your voice-- Let me hear it!" | 13 Thou that dwellest in the gardens, the companions hearken to thy voice: cause me to hear it. | 13 Thou that dwellest in the gardens, The companions hearken for thy voice: Cause me to hear it. | 13 Thou that dwellest in the gardens, the friends hearken: make me hear thy voice. | 13 The companions are attending to thy voice, Cause me to hear. Flee, my beloved, and be like to a roe, | 14 "Hurry, my beloved, And be like a gazelle or a young stag On the mountains of spices." | 14 Make haste, my beloved, and be thou like to a roe or to a young hart upon the mountains of spices. | 14 Make haste, my beloved, And be thou like to a roe or to a young hart Upon the mountains of spices. | 14 Flee away, O my beloved, and be like to the roe, and to the young hart upon the mountains of aromatical spices. | 14 Or to a young one of the harts on mountains of spices! |
